New 4G iPods contain secrets not publicized by Apple

Time Magazine’s Wilson Rothman, in naming Apple’s new 4G iPod their “Gadget of the Week,” writes, “The latest one is, without being contradictory, both a modest hop forward and a complete overhaul… you should know that internally the new iPod is a ground-up reconstruction, and its really compelling applications – the ones that very well might get the goat of anyone unable or unwilling to upgrade – are still secret. All that Apple is saying is that there’s more to this than what’s being publicized.”

MacDailyNews Take: Word on the street is that the new 4G iPods can also do top-notch card tricks that would make both Penn and Teller cry their eyes out over their inadequacy.

  1. home on ipod might be an extremely cool way to take all your PC files and put them on the iPod, then plug it into your new mac and have all that stuff organize itself..

    60 GB iPod..” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

No seriously… that would be a great adder/switcher medium

If Apple doesn’t do exactly what you just said, my company is developing the same exact thing, soon to be released. Lookin pretty good so far.

Auto PC to Mac-Everything! No reason to stick with a PC anymore.

  3. Apple is always stuffing their software with coding for the future. For example, why in the world would they make a huge array of audio and video effects an integral part of their core OS?

I am very sure it is not to compete with Photoshop. A small hint was given during Steve’s WWDC keynote speech as certain screen actions caused a ripple video effect. Such a suite of effects could make for a highly dynamic user interface. (The people at Microsoft think the “shadow effect ” for Longhorn windows is cool… yea, okay.)

Keeping such secrets hidden in the coding closets of a device makes for very quick and easy “innovations” if any competitor should think of themselves as a challenge to Apple.

Yes, hidden secrets are definitely a good tool for Apple to produce a “Penn & Teller”-like magic trick at a moments notice.

  4. A few weeks I read a statement from an Apple representative who was talking to developers about how easy it is to write applications for the iPod. He used a movie player as an example. I guess Apple has included a movie player in the new iPod firmware. With the current screen there would be no point to boast about this feature but it would be a nice bonus.

  5. Perhaps there will be integration between the new imac and the ipod. The original plans for OS 10.2 called for a way to keep your information on an ipod and use it on any computer. A built in ipod dock that allowed you to log in as yourself on any computer would be tremendously beneficial. The only flaw in this theory would be the amount to hardrive space you would have to give up to do this.

  6. stingerman, very perceptive – I’m impressed! Now, did you also know that iSight cams are out of stock waiting for some tweaks. Could be related to iMacs too perhaps?
One thing I love love love about Steve Jobs is that he knows how to build the drama.

  7. When Apple creates a special division for the iPod and puts their top engineer in charge of it, you just know Apple has some awesome plans for the future. Can’t wait for Aug. 31st…!

  8. pmd, my eMac has a 60gb hard drive. Might have to give up some hd space in the future, but the iPod wouldn’t have to carry the os. It may or may not have to carry the programs. It would only have to carry the files. Sure, you could carry the programs too, but, for most people, 60gb is enough for that. Even the two lower end iBooks carry 30gb and 40gb hard drives, and the iPod is already there! I do LOVE the idea though. Airport Express for printer server and internet access, up the storage on iDisk to something significant (several gigs), iPod serves as the carrier for software and docs. The end result is, a small office with no need for a server and anyone can work on any computer at any time in any location, all that’s needed is internet access and/or an iPod.

  9. So they might be doing the new iMac as sort of a flat screen monitor you can hang on a wall just like a tv, and the iPod might be tightly integrated with it, and the 4g iPod might have movie playing software…

Could it be that Apple is looking to the iMac as a potential replacement for the TV, and the iPod as a potential replacement for the VCR/Tivo? With built in Airport the new iMac might be able to send all audio signals to the home theater wirelessly…

  10. I think the iPod will be able to carry anyones home folder. They will market this to schools as an easy way for students to move from classroom to classroom and carry their files with them as well as their settings. The schools will then buy the new headless iMac or eMac and supply each student with an iPod. Much cheaper solution than laptops?

  11. It’s obvious. Forget the new iMac G5. The new iMac will be headless, of course – it will consist of just a monitor and Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. The CPU itself ? The iPod ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  12. Wait, I’ve got it! A headless iMac with the iPod serving as the monitor!

    Sorry, just couldn’t resist ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  13. What secrets?

Keefe, if I told you I’d have to kill you!

I like Todd’s speculation. A sophisticated car theft ring in England just got busted, and they were keeping all their records on an iPod.

We won’t need our own computers before long, just shell workstations that an iPod can be plugged into.
