The Apple Watch Ultra 4, which launched in September 2026 at a starting price of $799, is drawing positive reviews focused on meaningful practical upgrades rather than a full redesign. Reviewers testing the titanium-cased 49 mm model highlight its longer battery life, improved continuous heart-rate monitoring, and suitability for multi-day activity and outdoor use.

Tom’s Guide tested the Ultra 4 during a 22-mile run and concluded it is “without question, the best Apple Watch Ultra yet.” The publication specifically credited the new Health Sensing System, which measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day (a step up from prior models that limited continuous monitoring mostly to workouts). Side-by-side comparisons against a chest strap and an Oura Ring showed the Ultra 4 tracking “pretty much spot on.” Battery performance also stood out: the reviewer reported easily achieving two full days of use that included several hours of workouts, while noting faster charging that can deliver up to 18 hours of battery life from a 15-minute top-up.

Runners World offered a similarly upbeat assessment after weeks of testing, describing the Ultra 4 as “a vast improvement over the Ultra 3.” The outlet praised quicker GPS acquisition, strong heart-rate accuracy during steady efforts (typically within a few beats of a reference monitor), improved ECG performance, and battery life that can stretch to three days under heavy GPS use. Reviewers also noted the usefulness of hypertension notifications and cycle insights for athletes. The verdict positioned it as one of the strongest options for many runners who want reliable tracking without daily charging anxiety, along with the advantages of Apple’s app ecosystem and phone integration.

Other coverage reinforces these points. Expert Reviews and Gizmodo highlighted the jump to up to 50 hours of normal use (and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode) plus the new Readiness score as practical gains for active users. CNET reported real-world results exceeding Apple’s estimates in some tests, while Wired and others called the multiday endurance and faster charging clear advantages for hikers, campers, and endurance athletes. The rugged titanium build, bright 3,000-nit display, Action button, and existing satellite features continue to receive favorable mentions as part of the overall package.

While some reviewers note that the exterior design is largely unchanged from the Ultra 3 and that certain software features arrived later, the consistent positive themes across testing center on battery improvements, more frequent and accurate health sensing, and better performance during extended activity. For buyers upgrading from older Ultra or Series models — or those seeking a capable adventure-oriented Apple Watch — the Ultra 4 is frequently described as the most complete version yet.
