Apple has disclosed the full out-of-warranty repair pricing for the iPhone Duo, and the numbers make a strong case that AppleCare+ should be treated as essential rather than optional for the company’s first foldable iPhone.
Without coverage, an inner display repair is listed at $999, while “other damage” tops out at $1,499. Outer display damage comes in at $379, battery service at $229, and back glass at $199. A replaceable nano-texture cover layer over the folding screen is comparatively cheaper at $49, and rear camera damage is $229. Combining outer display and back glass damage is estimated at $509.
AppleCare+ changes the math dramatically. The plan is priced at $19.99 per month, $199.99 per year, or $399 upfront. With it, inner display repairs and other accidental damage drop to $99 each. Outer display damage falls to $29, back glass to $29, and the cover layer to $19. Battery service is free once capacity drops below 80 percent, while theft or loss claims carry a $149 deductible.
These figures arrive just days before pre-orders open. The iPhone Duo, announced September 9 and set for availability starting October 23 (pre-orders October 16), is Apple’s entry into the foldable category. When open it measures just 5.2 mm thick and carries a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED inner display with ProMotion up to 120 Hz, nano-texture finish to cut glare and soften the crease, Dynamic Island, Always-On capability, and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. The 5.4-inch outer display offers a more conventional iPhone experience with the same high refresh rate and brightness features. Apple positions the inner panel as 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Power comes from the A20 Pro chip (6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, dual 16-core Neural Engine) with vapor-chamber cooling. The camera system is a 48MP Dual Fusion setup: a 48MP Fusion Main (26 mm, f/1.6, sensor-shift OIS) that also provides optical-quality 2x zoom, plus a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide (13 mm, f/2.2, 120° FOV) with macro support. There’s a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer display and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner panel. Dual batteries deliver up to 24 hours of typical use, with video playback rated as high as 44 hours on the outer display or 31 hours on the inner one. The device uses a titanium enclosure, IP68 water and dust resistance, Touch ID in the side button, and supports Apple Intelligence features under iOS 27. Starting price is $1,999 for 256 GB, rising through 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB configurations.
For a device this expensive and mechanically complex—the first iPhone with a folding inner screen and dual-display architecture—the unprotected repair costs represent a large percentage of the purchase price. The $999 inner-display figure alone approaches half the cost of the base model, while the $1,499 “other damage” ceiling exceeds the price of many non-foldable flagships. Apple’s decision to price the replaceable cover layer separately suggests an awareness of the unique wear points on a folding OLED, yet the higher-end repairs remain substantial.
MacDailyNews Take: Given the pricing structure, the short window before launch, and the premium nature of the hardware, many buyers are likely to view AppleCare+ as a practical necessity rather than an add-on. The plan’s service fees bring the most expensive repairs into a more manageable range while also covering the battery and offering priority support and Express Replacement options. For anyone planning to carry and use a $2,000 foldable daily, the math strongly favors AppleCare+ coverage from day one.
