Apple set to debut Apple Intelligence in China in December

Apple is preparing to introduce its Apple Intelligence platform in mainland China in December, ending a prolonged regulatory hold that has kept the company’s AI tools out of one of its largest markets, according to Bloomberg News’ Mark Gurman.

The compnay plans to roll out the features as part of an upcoming iOS 27.3 update, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. The initial release is expected to include the AI capabilities that first became available in the United States roughly two years earlier on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. These cover tools such as Genmoji for custom emoji, writing assistance, AI-powered notification summaries, and the Clean Up feature in Photos that removes unwanted objects from images.

Newer capabilities announced more recently — including a rebuilt Siri AI assistant and certain advanced image-generation tools — are not expected to be part of the December launch. Secondary reporting citing the same developments has noted that Apple worked with Alibaba on models for the China version, incorporating guardrails that allow Chinese authorities to review ongoing model updates, and that some text-generation features may be limited in certain apps to meet local requirements.

The move follows repeated delays as Apple navigated China’s regulatory process for generative AI services. The Cyberspace Administration of China had previously registered the service, clearing a key hurdle after an extended review. China remains a critical market for Apple’s hardware sales, and the company has faced competition from domestic smartphone makers that have already introduced their own AI features. Apple has not publicly confirmed the December timing.
