Apple built a compact Apple Pencil specifically for the iPhone Duo, then abandoned it just before mass production, according to Bloomberg News‘ Mark Gurman. The custom stylus was shorter than the iPad models and was designed to attach magnetically to the hinge side of the foldable phone and charge there. Technical problems killed that plan. Apple fell back on the existing USB-C Apple Pencil already sold for iPad.
Pencil support was always on the Duo roadmap. The phone was designed with stylus use in mind. What was not designed from the start was compatibility with the current iPad pencils. Enabling those models is not a software toggle. Apple has to ship new software and complete a full internal testing cycle. That work is underway. The company said at the Duo unveiling that support should arrive by the end of the year. Gurman says that timeline should be taken literally, which points to late 2026 rather than launch day. The iPhone Duo is expected to go on sale in late October without working Pencil support.
The exact failure is not public. Later accounts have pointed to magnetic charging in the hinge, the stylus hardware itself, or the interaction between the two. Earlier reporting from Gurman had already flagged a separate risk: a pointed stylus on a foldable display can leave marks on a delicate screen. Either way, Apple chose not to hold the phone for a new accessory.
