SpaceX’s Starlink has unveiled its next-generation V2 satellites for mobile service, promising to deliver true 5G speeds directly from orbit.
The upgrade aims to provide peak download speeds of up to 150 Mbps per user, enabling seamless streaming, web browsing, high-speed apps, and voice calls—just like a terrestrial cellular network.
According to the announcement shared on X, the V2 satellites boast 100 times the data density of the current V1 generation, with approximately 20 times higher throughput capacity per satellite.
This leap in technology is powered by custom chips and advanced phased-array antennas, allowing the system to handle significantly more traffic while connecting directly to unmodified smartphones.
Starlink plans to expand its constellation dramatically, potentially adding up to 15,000 direct-to-cell satellites to achieve global coverage and support for millions of users.
The service, already operational in over 32 countries for basic features like texting, is set to disrupt traditional carriers by offering a comprehensive alternative for remote areas, maritime, aviation, and disaster response scenarios.
