Jim Cramer: ‘Apple could become number one in AI immediately if it bought Perplexity’

Jim Cramer

On July 17, 2025, during “Mad Money” and “Squawk on the Street,” American television personality, author, and former hedge fund manager Jim Cramer expressed concerns about Apple’s stock amid ongoing challenges but remained supportive of the company.

He suggested that Apple could significantly boost its AI credentials by acquiring Perplexity, stating, “Apple could come in and become number one in AI immediately if it bought Perplexity.” This comment reflects his view that Apple needs a bold move to address its lagging AI strategy, especially after losing key AI talent like Ruoming Pang to Meta.

Cramer also acknowledged investor worries following the announced retirement of COO Jeff Williams, noting, “Those of us who have backed Apple are worried.”

Despite these concerns, he defended Apple’s value, emphasizing its iconic product, saying, “Can we just recognize that Apple is a gem?” and highlighting the iPhone’s global appeal. He expressed frustration with the market’s reaction to trade tensions, particularly with China, where Apple manufactures most iPhones, but urged investors to focus on the company’s long-term strengths.

    1. “Apple trying to catch up in mobile phones is like Intel trying to catch up in the handheld device market.
      At this point, it’s hopeless.”

      Some Anonymous Dude in 2007

This repetitive dude must have totally bought into the latest hype, and wants Apple to chase every shiny object, rather than play the long game.

  1. I agree that Apple’s core strengths—especially the iPhone’s global presence—keep it a valuable player. The market often overreacts to short-term worries like trade tensions, but Apple’s innovation and ecosystem are long-term assets.

  2. “Catch up” is relative in Apple’s case. They don’t really need to create a ‘me-too’ LLM chatbot when all of the others can be accessed through their devices anyway. They NEED to make Siri work like an actual personal assistant with the iOS ecosystem and your data though. If acquiring Perplexity would make this possible then $30 billion isn’t too much to pay, but if it isn’t going to directly and quickly supercharge Siri then no.

  3. They bought many companies, and what did they do to them? Did it actually help apple? no, Apple took what they wanted, developed it for a while then turned it over made it bad, didn’t support it and delegated the “Features” to the boneyard. like ALL the other “features” That it BOUGHT out and didn’t care about. Hey what about updates to Final Cut, Itunes, iwork, ect, where are they? Nothing…
