A new Apple Immersive concert experience, Metallica, is coming to Apple Vision Pro this Friday, March 14th.

Filmed in Mexico City during the sold-out second-year finale of the band’s M72 World Tour, Metallica features full performances of three longtime staples from the band’s stadium-filling live shows — “Whiplash,” “One,” and “Enter Sandman” — and was captured exclusively in Apple Immersive Video. This remarkable storytelling format is only possible on Apple Vision Pro, with ultra-high-resolution 180-degree video and Spatial Audio to give viewers unprecedented access to James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo — from vantage points as close up as the famed Snake Pit, to wide-angle views of the band’s energetic performance in the round.

Customers can book an Apple Vision Pro demo at their local Apple Store to experience the magic of spatial computing, and enjoy an extended preview of Metallica beginning this Friday. Users can also enjoy the band’s performance with a new EP, M72 World Tour: Mexico City, available in Spatial Audio on Apple Music this Friday.

“Game changing is putting it lightly,” said Lars Ulrich of Metallica in a statement. “Seeing our concert like that, along with the energy of the Mexico City fans — it’s very immersive, and it’s super fun. We’ve always been interested in pushing the boundaries, and Metallica on Apple Vision Pro is exactly that.”

“Apple Immersive Video transforms the way people experience storytelling, and we’re thrilled to collaborate with Metallica on a concert unlike any before it,” said Tor Myhren, Apple’s vice president of Marketing Communications, in a statement. “With Metallica on Apple Vision Pro, you feel like you’re right there: front row, backstage, and even on stage with one of the biggest bands of all time.”

To capture the band’s full performance from multiple perspectives, and the energy of over 65,000 passionate Metallica fans, Apple built a custom stage layout featuring 14 Apple Immersive Video cameras using a mix of stabilized cameras, cable-suspended cameras, and remote-controlled camera dolly systems that moved around the stage.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich spoke with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about the Apple Immersive concert experience, the band’s enduring commitment to their fans, and the next leg of the band’s M72 World Tour at SXSW 2025 this afternoon. “I’ve been a music fan my whole life, and I’ve never experienced anything like this,” said Lowe. “It’s not just the best seat in the house — it’s like you’re in the only seat on stage.” Their full conversation will be available on the SXSW YouTube channel.

More Episodes and Films Available in Apple Immersive Video

Users can enjoy more Apple Immersive Video only on Apple Vision Pro, including new episodes of the Adventure and Boundless series. In the fourth episode of Adventure, “Deep Water Solo,” viewers follow world-class climber Kai Lightner as he scales the craggy seaside cliffs of Mallorca, Spain, and makes a risky free-solo ascent on Cova del Diablo. In the second episode of Boundless, “Arctic Surfing,” viewers can paddle into the icy waters of Norway as a group of intrepid surfers pursue the rush of its wintry waves.

VIP: Yankee Stadium is a new Apple Immersive sports film that gives viewers an all-access pass. Broadcasting legend Joe Buck takes viewers back to a “Friday Night Baseball” matchup between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, with an all-encompassing look at elite athletes, die-hard fans, dedicated staff, and epic moments. VIP: Yankee Stadium will be available for free worldwide on Friday, April 4 — one week after the return of “Friday Night Baseball” on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 28.

A special edition of Bono: Stories of Surrender will debut globally on Apple Vision Pro in Apple Immersive Video alongside its release on Apple TV+ on Friday, May 30. Bono: Stories of Surrender (Immersive) places viewers onstage with Bono, and completely immerses them in his story, as he pulls back the curtain on his remarkable life and the family, friends, and faith that have challenged and sustained him. It’s the first feature-length film available in Apple Immersive Video and the latest example of Bono’s commitment to innovation.

MacDailyNews Take: As we reported back in May 2023, the month before Apple Vision Pro was unveiled:

Little birdie tells us that one selling point of Apple’s mixed-reality headset will be attending live and recorded concerts remotely… [T]he headset will “as much as possible, be like being there – with extras like changing seat positions.”

  1. I saw them in Minneapolis this past summer. Fantastic show… if I owned a Vision Pro, I’d totally be loving this.

Perhaps one day, when I can justify such an expensive purchase, I can see Metallica again… 🙂

  2. This is exactly where I think Apple should be focussing its Vision Pro efforts – on unique content.

With the current size and weight, the Vision Pro is an accessory that users will comfortably wear for an hour or two per day. This makes it the perfect device to consume content such as movies, concerts or sporting events in ways that traditional devices can’t match.

I also think this approach would be key to growing the Vision Pro’s user base. Apple should partner with many top musicians and sports teams to buy tickets to single events or season passes to an entire season or concert tour. Metallica is more my speed, but imagine the number of Vision Pros Apple could sell if it offered the ability for Swifties to “attend” Taylor Swifts’s Eras tour last year! My daughter flew to Paris for her concert since it was actually cheaper to go to Europe than buy tickets on the resale market stateside. I’ll save the Ticketmaster monopoly and criminal resale ticket market in the US for another discussion.

Apple could sell a single viewing of a concert (choose venue) from an artist performing for a lower price, and allow repeated viewing for a higher price. With the same single and repeated viewing pricing model for the concert tour, where artists often have different opening acts or surprise guests in addition to different set lists.

    1. I forgot to add that many artists/bands only tour major cities and may never come close enough for a large percentage of their fans to attend a concert. Tickets to popular acts easily run in excess of $100 and can easily cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars for seats that the Vision Pro would make you feel like you are sitting in.
