“Sunny,” the Apple TV+ mystery sci-fi thriller starring Rashida Jones, has been cancelled after one season, Screen Daily reports citing “Sources close to the production.”

Sources close to the production confirmed that series, produced by A24, will not return following the 10-episode run that began in July and concluded with a cliffhanger on September 4. Screen has contacted Apple TV+ and A24 for comment.
The story starred Jones as Suzie Sakamoto, a US woman living in a futuristic Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. They develop an unexpected friendship begin to uncover the dark truth of what really happened to her family.
The US series was somewhat distinctive for being wholly shot in Japan. Production began in summer 2022, before Japan had fully re-opened its borders to tourists, and ran through the rest of the year.

I lost interest about 4 episodes in. The plot lines seemed to meander and get lost in some of the details. The swearing was just way over the top gratuitous (what is with Hollywood today and swearing????).
It could have been better. It was a waste of Rashida’s talent. When they cancel a show, they should at least shoot one more episode to wrap up a cliff hanger so that future viewers will watch it.
If you know a show ends on a cliff hanger people are less likely to watch it.
This series should/could have been a very family friendly mystery/comedy. It had a very promising premise. Couldn’t make it through one episode because of the aforementioned uncalled for, out-of-character, over-the-top foul language.
I never had interest. Especially in Apple TV+

It’s a shame to hear “Sunny” won’t be returning, especially with its intriguing premise and Rashida Jones leading the charge. A futuristic Kyoto, a mystery, and robots — it had potential! On a lighter note, Snow Rider is a blast for anyone into snowboarding games!
That’s disappointing—I really enjoyed Sunny’s quirky tone and Rashida Jones’ performance. Any word on why it was canceled? Feels like Apple TV+ is quick to pull the plug on shows lately. Hopefully the team gets another shot with a new project soon. The premise had so much potential!
