Every Mac is getting an M4, but not all at the same time

Apple M4

Apple’s M4 chip, initially introduced in the iPad Pro, is set to supercharge the Mac lineup. Unlike previous M-series chips, the M4 will power every Mac model, from entry-level to high-end.

Expected fall 2025 lineup:

• MacBook Pro: All existing models will receive the M4 chip, with a more affordable 14-inch option featuring the standard M4. Higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch models will boast the more powerful M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.

• Mac mini: Undergoing a significant redesign, the new Mac mini will be smaller than ever, resembling the Apple TV 4K. It will offer both M4 and M4 Pro options.

• iMac: Also slated for an M4 upgrade, the iMac will likely maintain its current design.

These updates, expected to be unveiled at an October special media event, promise to enhance performance, efficiency, and user experience across Apple’s Mac ecosystem.

The MacBook Air is expected to wait until spring 2025, according to Bloomberg News‘ Mark Gurman. Apple’s more powerful desktop Macs, the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, are expected to receive M4 updates in mid-2025 (think just before or during Apple’s WWDC keynote address in June).

  1. From what I read about the M3 being a not very efficient stop gap filler branding exercise till the real thing could be introduced this year, I will wait for the M4 before I consider a new Mac. Seems to be backed by the higher performance models sticking with higher end M2s as I perused the Apple Store last week.

  2. Still using my 2014 Core I7 mini with 16GB ram running Monterrey with an Apple Thunderbolt display from around 2010. Works well but struggles with high bit rate video.

An M4 Mini might be in my future

      1. How do you know BenS is using the internet, since most likely the Mac OS I’m guessing is obsolete?

I’m running 10.4 Tiger on one of my many Macs and would not connect to the internet for 64-bit software or browser updates on a 32-bit system.

Give people credit and not so quick to assume the worst..

    1. do we have any specific rumors on the M5 ? are you just waiting for the next iteration. I’m guessing M5 has dedicate AI silicon for on device generation ??? but that’s just a guess

Isn’t M4 using TSMC latest fab tech

      1. I see, M5 is using the latest upcoming TSMC magic. Chip is designed for AI distributed

        https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20240703PD213/apple-cloud-ai-chips-cloud-computing-market.html

rumor of TSMC’s M5 SoC has all of its components on a monolithic die – the CPU and GPU cores, the NPU, memory controllers, built in USB/Thunderbolt controllers, Secure Enclave, etc. What SoIC allows for is all of those SoC components to be split out and fabricated separately but then integrated back with each other with resulting performance that’s actually better than a monolithic SoC die.

So instead of an Ultra being two Max chips being stitched together it could be a large CPU tile joined to a large GPU tile with smaller controller component tiles added on

    2. The M4 is BARELY out and people are saying they’ll wait for the M5? The M5 is not likely to show up until a year or more from now. From everything I’ve read (multiple sources) Apple is very likely to let the M4 settle things down for a while. The M3 was somewhat of a stop gap chip as well as a transition chip. It wasn’t meant to be a mainstay for a long while. With the M4 having the first real iteration of a few new capabilities it does not have to go the way the M3 has gone.

Sounds to me like people who will always be waiting for the next thing! The next generation will always be faster or require less power or have new/advanced capabilities.

While no one (not even Tim Cook) can accurately predict what Apple will be shipping in quantity in August 2025, it’s very possible that the M5 will not be shipping in quantity even then.

      1. Maybe some have cooled from thinking of having the next biggest thing each iteration and are completely comfortable with not giving Apple any money for iterations they can easily skip.
