Black Lives Matter activists say U.S government fight to break iPhone encryption threatens civil liberties

“The open letter to Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym, posted to Apple’s website, warns of the negative repercussions that could arise from a U.S. government effort to force Apple’s aid in unlocking an iPhone used by San Bernardino terror suspect Syed Rizwan Farook,” Mikey Campbell reports for AppleInsider.

“‘No party should wield the power to force private companies to weaken the security of all in order to investigate a few,’ the letter reads,” Campbell reports. “The amicus brief was written last week and signed by Beats, Rhymes & Relief, the Center for Media Justice, The Gathering for Justice and the Justice League NYC. Individual signatories include New York Daily News Senior Justice Writer Shaun King and Opal Tometi, co-founder of Black Lives Matter and Director of Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI).”

“‘As Rev. Jesse Jackson recalled last week, one need only look to the days of J. Edgar Hoover and wiretapping of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. to recognize the FBI has not always respected the right to privacy for groups it did not agree with,’ the group says,” Campbell reports. “‘The FBI’s historically questionable surveillance procedures do not bode well for setting a precedent that allows the agency universal access to private smartphone data,’ the group writes.”

        BLM was stolen from the old Black Panthers’ agenda and it’s list of ten demands almost exactly mirrors the BP’s works.

  2. Black lives of course matter, as do Asian, Pacific Islanders, Hispanic, Caucasian and whomever I’m missing I apologize. I would like to know if BLM is involved in making sure black lives matter in black communities. I read my local newspaper and I swear I’m seeing more black on black killings than white on black or Asian American on black.

    I guess I just don’t understand.

      First of all, in ANY community, most of the people who are killed are killed by someone in that community, so your point is…? Second of all, if you haven’t seen people in Black communities working to reduce violence within their community, you clearly aren’t paying attention.
      So, it seems your point here was to try to excuse racism by saying that the victims are at fault? That’s not cool.

      1. 93% of black people are killed by other black people. This isn’t a measurement like 4 out of 5, this is terms of thousands.

        I am sick of people like you pushing racism as an excuse for anti-social violent behavior. It is not. The only role racism plays in society today is as a tool for political gain. Racism is the false cudgel of leftists. The never ending monotonous emphasis on racism relegates us to nothing more than victims, and this is exactly where the left wants us. Not because black lives matter, but because black votes matter.

          Just to check: you seriously don’t think that institutions discriminate on a systematic basis against non-white people?

        2. I’m talking about the numbers. The number of blacks viciously murdered by other blacks vastly outnumbers whites killed by whites. When you look at that 93%, it isn’t 93% of 5 murders, it’s 93% of thousands of murders. Less than 1% of black people are killed by anyone else, including cops. If black lives really mattered, the finger of blame would point steadily at black people themselves. NO ONE ELSE HAS ANY CULPABILITY.

          You also seem to be saying that thousands of murders occur in the black community, but only 5 in other communities. I assume you know that is false, so what is your intention here?

      2. In Baltimore it’s not that important if it’s a black man who’s killed; the only important factor is the race of the person who killed said black man. Black on black homicide is never-ending, and only becomes an issue to the black community if it involves a child. If a white person, inevitably a police officer, kills a black then all hell breaks loose, regardless of the guilt or innocence of the victim.

    1. A regular chant at BLM protests is: “All lives will matter when Black Lives Matter!”
      In other words, they are trying to point out that our institutions have been telling them (by actions!) that “all lives do NOT matter.”
      So, they are saying “Black Lives Matter, too!” without using the final word, which frankly would make the chant sound pretty simply, right?
      People who claim they are saying “_only_ Black Lives Matter” must have a reason they are deliberately mis-interpreting what is being said. I wonder why that is…

        1. I disagree. Leaving it out makes it clear who is intentionally misunderstanding them. Since they are very clear about protesting the unfair (i.e. unequal) treatment they receive from U.S. institutions, when someone deliberately pretends to add the word “only” at the beginning, it makes it clear that person is looking for any excuse to keep letting U.S. agencies murder Black people.
          It’s a litmus test: when someone is deliberately obtuse and decides the word “only” is implied, it reveals that they do NOT like Black people standing up for themselves. They will find any reason, no matter how lame, to dodge the issue.

A lot of folks are going on about all lives matter, and yes I’m all for the respect towards the spotted owl and the worms, but taking that aspect ignores the fact that most of life depends on other life, i.e. consumers like lions tigers and bears eat other lives, so other lives to matter to them. Not so much for other living things like plants (producers) and certain microbes (decomposers). Other lives don’t matter to them because they don’t rely on other lives to sustain them (though that’s not the way it works out in the field as there are a variety of symbiotic relationships both good and detrimental out there.

    According to scientists there have been extinctions of over 90% of the species that have ever existed on earth, and the species that really matter are the plants and microbes. Take away all the plants for example and there is no life. Take away the consumers, not a problem there is still lots of life.

    So just remember the lives that really really matter are plants and microbes. The rest are very optional.

      1. I know, I just toss that in to try to shake off that approach a lot of people have about being the center of the universe. It’s kind of like going in front of the SPCA and killing a bunch of cockroaches and taunting them to do something about it. I mean if it was the SPCM (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Mammals) it would be all right cause essentially that’s what they protect but nooooo they have to be grandiose with their grand standing and insinuated that they protect all animals. They won’t even protect fish from being abused in aquariums, I know I tried.

        That’s just an example, you probably notice it here, when it comes to nationalism it’s all rah rah rah, but bring forth global ideas, it’s listen to the crickets chirp and they make a very good point.

          I say that murder is in the natural order of things and you say it’s an invention of H. sapiens. So by extension H. sapiens is not part of the natural order of things.
          Fascinating that you would come up with that, as so many do.
          So I guess H. sapiens are what then, above nature, below, beside it, deity like? Are they in the same group as Castor canadensis the ultimate lodge and dam builders? They have been doing it well before H. sapiens came into existence.

          I did check the literature, and the Spanish Influenza of 1918 killed between 20 and 40 million people. It has been cited as the most devastating epidemic in recorded world history and killed more people than the second world war. Humans may be fascinated with the subject but they are far from being the ultimate killers.

          When it comes to killing off members of its own species, it may be the most flamboyant, but it is not unique. When it comes to being unique H. sapiens is the only creature that I know of that produces materials toxic to itself but to every other living organisms. It has however come nowhere near producing the amount needed to eradicate life on this planet.

          Realizing that humans are part of nature is an important step of working with the life sustaining principle of nature, one being diversity.

Far better to rely on seasoned astrologers, as the late Nancy Reagan did in helping formulate favourable agendas for her wounded warrior President.
