“Mark Gurman reports that the iPhone 5SE will go on sale on Friday March 18th, just three days after it is revealed on Tuesday March 15th,” Ewan Spence writes for Forbes. “This release date says a lot about Apple’s strategic thinking.”
“It starts to spread iPhone sales throughout the year instead of clumping them around September,” Spence writes. “It boosts Apple’s short-term sales for the start of the year and could keep the iPhone growth figures positive. And it will weaken the release of the Galaxy S7 devices from arch-rival Samsung.”
“These sales will give Apple a timely boost in a quiet sales period, and while that will have a notable impact on the April-June quarter,” Spence writes, “the rush of initial sales is going to take place in the first calendar quarter of the year.”

MacDailyNews Take: Everything sounds great except for the name. The “5” makes it seem like old tech, regardless of what’s inside, and the “se” adds unnecessary complexity. If they’re going to round off the case edges à la the 6 and 6s models, with 6/s color schemes available (Space Gray, Silver, Gold, Rose Gold), name it using a “6,” at least.
Except my 5S is problematic (loose lightning connector that charges sporadically) and I don’t want an oversized 6. So the timing on this is perfect for me.
Did you ever clean the port? I had a charging problem but the port collects a lot of lint causing connection problems. Cleaning it using a toothpick solved those.
Same here, took it to the genius bar for replacement and they pulled out unseen lint to fix the problem. The lint was hidden…
They took one of those little blowers to my iPhone to clean out the Lightning port. It had been just awful before that but it was fixed 100%. No charge for the dust blower.
Use a dry toothbrush. Works great, at least on the older 30-pin ports.
I agree with MDN. The “5” makes it sound ancient. Why not iPhone 6 mini?
Because it isn’t based on the iPhone 6 form factor. It’s based on the iPhone 5s form factor but with supposedly 6s internals: IOW an iPhone 5s enhanced or iPhone 5se.
That is exactly what is wrong also.. Using a 3 year old form factor and calling a new phone…wont fly !
Ps.. It will feel like apple is regurgitating old product and has no ideas….
Bear Pundits will have their heyday with that .
Keep adding thoughts… Lol.
Now if apple made a 5 looking phone.. But modernized it with making it super slim and using more exotic materials..(im asuming moden specs regardless)….then it would be a different story .
Coming to think of it …..Apple naming conventions can, more often than not, be a bit odd.. At least to me… iTunes is the best example..
MacBook, macbook air, macbook pro; .just looking at the names one can easly identify the pro as to be top of the line.. But macbook and macbook air? What do they say about the models..? To me, air sounds like the most portoable and low powered.. Yet its not so.
IMHO…..
…When the “older” form factor is better… equals making the “newer” be the past.
Why not call it the “6 minus” since there’s gonna be three sizes now?
6c-compressed
…or 6c – compact.
what about calling it iPhone Mini?
The number difference makes it clear why it’s cheaper, and why there’s greater value proposition in an actual iPhone 6. The new iPhone 5 is supposed to entice more price conscience customers. Apple wants to expand iPhone sales to these customers, but they still want people to buy the actual iPhone 6’s too.
What about calling it the iPhone 5.1? It says it’s still the iPhone 5, but newer. I think the point would be made clear this way.
I don’t get the 5 moniker either.
But what I do like is that Apple are changing it up and releasing products at different times.
if it comes in blue i will buy it
Calling it “5,” bad move. The vast majority of Apple buyers buy based on fashion, not tech.
That may well be true, even though you say it like a grandpa waxing ironic in a rocking chair, chewing on a corncob pipe. Some signs that it may be true are to be found right here in these forums. Ostensibly tech-centric commenters weighing in on outré naming conventions? Who has time for that? It it’s über-important to them, it must be important to every consumer.
It’s not what it’s named—it’s what it does.
Yes…but that is only half of the story …For more people than not imho.
The other half is if its has the correct psychological hook. … Name and look
The 5 name and form factor will make it sound its related to a 3 year old product.. Not good.
5
IF the new model is styled after the iPhone 6, then use iPhone 6C (compact), iPhone 6S (standard) iPhone 6G (grande) for the small, medium and largest versions, with the processor, memory and other specs being (mostly) the same.
For the 5 to make sense, you might try to think of how some car makers use numbers to name their cars. The BMW 5 series or 3 series, the Peugeot 308, etc. These model number lines are distinct cars with identities. The model names don’t change much, but the cars are updated year after year. Some buyers are loyal to the smaller BMW 3 series or the larger 7 series. Some love the Peugeot 208, which used to be the 207 and so on. No one thinks the new versions of the 5 series are ancient.
Yes ..but apple never merchandized the iphone in that fashion.
The car model analogy u used would be the equivalant of iphone size…4″, 4.7, 5.5 ” etc……
Liexample …i like the iphone 7 5.5 more than iPhone 6 5.5.. …
The constant is the size .. And the year designation is the number …. in a nutshell……. Apple iPhone 6 4.7 is equivalent to Bmw 2005 320
I hope that made sense 🤔😳
T
Calling it a 5se makes sense if chassis is same as 5s
5S extended capability
I have to assume it looks like a 5 not a 6
If it has a 5 name and has a 3 year old design its a bad move.
Otherwise haveing a 3 size “new” iphone lineup , launch spread out through the year is fantastic.

Sorry .. Duplicate … And typos… 😳
Typos are excused, and duplicate comments tolerated, when the messages are as interesting as yours… 😀
You words are a delight to the soul !!! Thank you 🙂
Well all that AND the fact if you lookup the Mac Buyer’s guide nothing is worth buying right now it’s almost all in the red.
If it has the awesome 4 inch screen in a 5S housing rocking upgraded components.. lets call it the “iPhone 5S-Turbo 4 Mini Deluxe One Hand Pocketable”
LOL
Seriously, who cares about the form factor naming convention? Base the name on the internals. iPhone 6 Standard, iPhone 6s4, iPhone 6-4, iPhone 6 Mini, iPhone 6SS, iPhone 6s RT, iPhone 6 IROC-Z… Just something that follows internal components instead of external housing.
Oh, I WANT ONE.
It looks like you’ve answered the question, “What would Microsoft do?”
Can’t wait. The screen size of the 6 series is not the problem I have with it. It’s just the abysmal product that it is. With the 5se we at least get the best in its class Apple engineering, in a great package.
The 6 was Apples first attempt at a larger phone and blew it big time. Let’s hope the 7 is a step in the right direction
