“Waterstones is taking Amazon’s Kindle off its shelves three years after the UK’s biggest bookseller and the web retail giant teamed up,” James Titcomb reports for The Telegraph.
“James Daunt, Waterstones’ managing director, said that sales of the e-reader had been ‘pitiful’ and that he welcomed every Kindle sale because ‘it brings you closer to getting it off your shelves forever,'” Titcomb reports. “Mr Daunt told The Bookseller: ‘Sales of Kindles continue to be pitiful so we are taking the display space back in more and more shops.'”
“Earlier this year, Mr Daunt said sales of the Kindle had ‘disappeared,'” Titcomb reports. “According to the Association of American Publishers, e-book sales fell 10 per cent in the first five months of the year in the US.”

why is a physical store bookseller selling kindles? The more Kindles sold the fewer paper books sold right?
A wise decision since Amazon was basically raping their business from the inside. Never understood why they’d sell something that effectively helps put them out of business.
But yeah the Kindle is probably past it’s peak popularity too.
Kindle is toast. Amazon should focus on AWS and back away from consumer electronics embarrassments
It’s a pity. I do like my Kindle… because it’s a pure ebook reader and serves only the one function. But that’s the advantage because I can read the entire day without worrying about the battery dying.
Even my iPad Mini (light as it is) is too heavy (and a tad bulky) to hold comfortably for long, and my iPhone is still the 5S, so… smaller screen and I don’t want to tax the battery.
Kindle, like the iPad, doesn’t get turned over every 18 months by their owners so once every book reading family has one ( in addition to their smartphones ) the sales are going to drop off.
They are useful in some situations (taking a selection of books on vacation etc.) but there is something to be said for turning pages.
People who frequent book shops trend to enjoy physically reading books so hardly a surprise I guess.
Oh great! Another way for Amazon to NOT make a profit, inevitably resulting it the AMZN stock price reaching another peak in value. (o_0) <- WallNut Street.
