“A new rumor floating around the web today indicates that Apple may have recently purchased FaceShift, a Swiss tech company specializing in real-time markerless facial motion capture,” Mike Beasley reports for 9to5Mac. “It wouldn’t be Apple’s first purchase in the area of facial motion capture or gesture control, though outside of the new Apple TV, it’s unclear what they might be using it for.”
“While Apple and FaceShift haven’t yet confirmed the buyout, there are some interesting details that seems to point to that being the case,” Beasley reports. “Whether this technology is intended to tie into the new Apple TV as part of a gaming platform (think Xbox avatars) or will tie into some other new or existing Apple technology has yet to be seen, but it’s clear they’re invested in this area.”

MacDailyNews Take: Photo Booth on steroids. 😉
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers “Brawndo Drinker” and “Bill” for the heads up.]
Mommy, I’m scared.
I prefer the girl on the left; I’m just not into nose rings.
Captain Kirk liked ’em green!
Depends on how long “its” been.
Photo Booth on STEROIDS, MDN?!
STEROIDS?!
Wow. I expect I wil be able to add acne now.
The headline says “has purchased” but then the story says “may have recently purchased”
Very sloppy, I feel kind of cheated.
It was actually Google that bought it to monitor our faces when we see their ads to judge their effectiveness. It is evil times two.
My god that is uncannily almost true. It adds dimensions to their analytics. They can evolve ads, not just tailor them to a keyword list. Then, with an A.I. crafting the ads from a pallet coloured with YOUR emotions, you and your wallet will be unwitting thralls. After maximising your expenditures thru their ad networks, the next step will be most chilling of all. They’ll know how to stimulate your every emotional response. What’s more evil than taking over peoples’ computers to create a botnet? Turning us into pod people.
—Wait, it was just a dream…Google changed their name to Alphabet, that can’t be real…Apple is working with IBM and Cisco in the enterprise, that’s absurd…(rubs eyes) must wake up. Coffee please…
For VR!!!!?
Some people get to have too much fun at work.
You don’t make aquistions like this to boost Photo Booth. Think face recognition for authentication
Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and they generally do not discuss their purpose or plans.
It’s like they say, if you can’t innovate, buy other companies that can. Apple is adrift, coasting without a true captain. Tim “the steward” Cook is visionless, incompentent, and like the titanic, Apple will hit its iceberg and sink. Cook is just re-arranging deckchairs and playing nice music before it goes under.
Not VR, look to the right: it’s AI stupid!!!
