Dark Sky’s Apple Watch app taps your wrist before it rains

“From the first time I strapped on an Apple Watch, I knew it was the platform Dark Sky [$3.99 via App Store] was always meant for,” Adam Grossman, Dark Sky’s co-creater, blogs. “I often miss Dark Sky notifications whenever my iPhone isn’t on me. And the times I care most about getting rained on — when I’m outside my home — are the very times I’m least likely to want to pull a phone out of my pocket. Hell, it takes longer to fish it out than it does to check the notification itself.”

“Getting a Dark Sky notification on your wrist just feels different. A little chime, a gentle tap on your wrist, and a quick glance; the effortlessness of it makes it feel qualitatively different than receiving a notification on your phone. It’s both far less intrusive and far less likely to be missed,” Grossman writes. “The app isn’t just about notifications, however. It’s a full-featured weather app designed from scratch to fit on your wrist, providing detailed current conditions and an overview of today and the next five days.”

Here’s what it looks like:

“The main screen contains details of the next hour, and can be scrolled down to reveal additional information: wind, humidity, visibility, etc. Swiping to the right reveals pages with overviews of the next five days which contain high/low temperature, a detailed summary, and a chart of hour-by-hour conditions throughout the day,” Grossman. “Overall, I’m extremely pleased with how it turned out. It’s not often that you get the chance to design for an entirely new platform, especially one so well suited to the task. Dark Sky for Apple Watch will be a free upgrade, available on day one.”

  1. Too good. I use “Check the Weather” on my iPhone, which has Dark Sky embedded and have always been amazed at the short term precipitation predictions. One more reason to have an AppleWatch.

  2. What a great app, I do hope it covers all sorts of dangerous precipitation with messages like “Torturing alien invaders in area, heavy shelling expected in the next 20 minutes…”

    1. Looking f***ing up doesn’t exactly tell you it’s gonna rain in the next hour. The sky might be dark, but if Dark Sky tells me it’ll start raining in 45 minutes, then I can go for a quick run or take my dog out for that quick 30-minute walk.

I guess one alternative is to lick my thumb, stick it in the wind, and guess if it’ll rain in the next hour, but no thanks — I’ll take Dark Sky.

  3. These weather apps aren’t the most accurate and vary widely. Like a previous poster said: look up. This technological craze of relying on the damn phone and watch is going insane. Next you’ll be scheduling when to shit and piss. God.

  4. This will be worth the price of the Sport model for me. I don’t collect watches but knowing whether to grab my umbrella or jacket before I head down the stairs is useful to me. Especially when it’s dark outside.
