Some Asians angered by Apple’s ‘racist’ yellow emoji

“In an effort to better represent society, Apple has revealed a new set of globally diverse emoji that will come in six different skin tones,” Ellie Zolfagharifard reports for The Daily Mail. “The tones include an option that turns a character yellow – a shade that the the Cupertino-based company says it intended to be ethnically neutral.”

“But the colour has angered some Apple users, particularly those in China, who claim that the yellow tone is offensive to Asians,” Zolfagharifard reports. “Many took to Twitter to voice their concerns with one user, Jade Tran, writing: ‘Is the yellow emoji suppose to represent Asians because I have never in my life seen an Asian lookin like that.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Those emoji are meant for those suffering from Jaundice, silly. Apple is mucho inclusive, dontcha know?

“The move could damage Apple’s reputation in one of its leading markets. The group doubled its sales in China last year, while Samsung has been losing market share,” Zolfagharifard reports. “The new emoj are being trialled on OS X 10.10.3 and iOS 8.3 beta 2.”

  1. Maybe each Emoji could come with it’s own colour picker.
But what would the base starting colour be?

And then they could embed a full featured editing suite to change the eyes, nose, mouth, hat, beard etc.

And then they could make them animate – they could embed a full 3D editing program!

And then they could make them talk! a full suite of sounds, with all the races of the world’s accents embedded!

Or they could you know, concentrate on things their users actually want and have demanded – just sort out the network stack and make continuity, hand-off, wi-fi & bluetooth all ‘just work’ together.

  2. Where are the lovely emojis with slanted eyes?? There are those of us who genuinely think Asians on average have the prettiest almond-shaped eyes, they ought to be represented IMO. I would use them even as a Western person.

  3. Some people, meaning a few, get their panties in a wad, then follows the inevitable cry that “everyone” needs to calm down.

Pretty sure most people don’t care about this but hey it makes a good story so why not.

  4. Maybe if that emoji had black hair and “asian eyes” then yes you would be expected believe it represents Asians. But since it’s just a yellow tone on what appears to be a bald Caucasian man, NO.
