“IDC’s ‘preliminary’ estimate 5.75 million Macs shipped in the December quarter looked high to our panel of analysts when it came out on Jan. 13,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “It still seems high.”
“IDC’s guess is bigger than that of 75% of the analysts we’ve heard from so far — 18 professionals and 15 amateurs,” P.E.D. reports. “They range now from a low of 5.1 million (still BGC’s Colin Gillis) to a high of 5.98 million (StockCharts’ Daya Baren). The mean estimate of 5.58 million represents a 14% increase over the same quarter last year — and is 68,000 higher than the average 10 days ago.”

What’s more useless than a typical Apple “analyst”? A “panel of analysts.” 🙂
I do believe “ken1w” you have established a new essential truth equation. 🙂
IDC has never been correct, they are paid to pass this drivel.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day, as the saying goes. IDC’s estimate is probably in the ballpark, but I think the company has done well this quarter overall due to a general perception of the company executing well. I’m inclined to lean towards the higher-end of the consensus range.
A but a military time clock is right only once a day. . .
What is the collective noun for Analysts’?
Maybe a clustercfuk, or an idiocy, or ………..
How about a phallacy?
A felicitious joining of two common descriptors of that worthy profession:
fal·la·cy \ˈfa-lə-sē\ noun : the quality of being false or wrong
phal·lic \ˈfa-lik\ adjective : of, relating to, or resembling a dick
once again in perfect form,
glad to read again….
I was going to say something like ‘a pustulant-gatherum’. But phallacy is much nicer!
95% of all statistics are made up. This is one of them. 🙂
And we are supposed to care about this frantic guestimation four days before we’ll have real data in hand BECAUSE WHY?!
It will be truly amazing if Apple sell 5.75M Macs in the Xmas quarter. Typically the earlier quarter when education sales take place is when Mac sales peak in the year.
It is quite odd that IDC are predicting this since they usually cite significantly lower numbers that Apple achieve.
I am wondering if this is a ploy to produce high expectations so that Apple can fail.
Imagine how many Macs could have been sold with proper advertising and an attractive & intuitive GUI.
