Even Apple is surprised by massive iPhone 6/Plus demand

“As the holiday shopping season moves along, Apple continues to get love from Wall Street with JMP Securities the latest firm to boost its price target on the stock of the world’s largest company. It’s the fourth such price target boost in the past few days,” Chris Ciaccia reports for The Street.

“Analyst Alex Gauna boosted his price target to $150, keeping his ‘market outperform’ rating following retail and online checks that revealed “powerful demand” for Apple products during the holiday shopping season,” Ciaccia reports. “‘Even as the supply of iOS devices gradually improves and online ordering lead times have eased, Apple is continuing to sell out and/or seeing extended lead times for its highest-end iPhone and iPad offerings in the U.S. and China and we see this translating into positive implications for December quarter unit volumes, ASPs, and gross margins,’ Gauna wrote in a note. ‘We are also witnessing a lack of competitive momentum from key Android rivals that we believe should translate into further share gains for Apple in the December quarter, better entrenchment of the business model, and a wide-open opportunity for Apple to transform the wearables and mobile payment markets in 2015.'”

“The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been in such incredible demand since they first became available in September that Apple has had trouble making enough units to keep up with demand, most notably demand for the larger, 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus,” Ciaccia reports. “Guana believes that Apple has made inroads on getting supply increased, but noted that sources ‘have indicated that even Apple has been surprised by the strength of demand.'”

  1. The advertising and marketing types obsess over the young who are so broke that they cannot pay attention and are in debt up to their ass while they ignore the over 40 types who actually have money and are far less indebted- if at all. Seems convoluted to me.

Older eyes like bigger phones- not too big- but bigger than the tiny form of the original iPhone. Do not laugh if you are too young to care- your turn will be coming.

I think a lot of pent up demand came from people like me who wanted a bigger display for various reasons. Something still a phone but in a more functional size for doing things other than making a phone call.

    1. I agree. My iPhone 6 Plus is much better on my older eyes (and I love it) even though it’s a bit unwieldy in my pocket.

In some future tech a smaller sized phone with a large display via holo display or some such might solve the problem. In the meantime it’s a good problem to have and I’ll gladly deal with the issue.

      1. I predicted my parents, who have worn glasses their whole life, would jump on this phone because for the first time they can see who is calling or make a call without their glasses on… but this goes for people of all ages, contacts wearers, etc.

As for me with above average vision, I find it a lot more comfortable to read without constantly scrolling – it is a better user experience for reading email and web than the smaller iPhone 4S where I find that my reading comprehension takeaway was lower.

        1. My vision used to be exemplary – 20/20 all the way up to my Fifties and better than either of my parents who were wearing glasses in their early 40’s.. But age always brings away a slow deterioration of once amazing health and abilities. As they say “the older you get the cuter you ain’t”. It could be a LOT worse so I’m not complaining, especially considering the dirt nap alternative.

  2. … but noted that sources ‘have indicated that even Apple has been surprised by the strength of demand.’

Oh well – “sources” – there you go. That’s conclusive.
Actually, I think it is an incredibly stupid remark. Apple produced two larger phones. Given how astute Tim and the rest are, I don’t think they were surprised at all by the demand.

    1. Apple and Steve very vocally stated they thought large phones and small tablets were not the right size to be usable.

But two huge successes for Android were smaller tablets and larger phones.

Its obvious they were surprised in both cases. But those significant differentiators for Android are gone now and I don’t know of any others.

      1. Yes, that’s what they said back THEN. But these two larger models have been in the works for a while. I’m just saying I don’t think anyone at Apple NOW is surprised they are selling at the pace they are, as this idiot writer contends.

  3. “The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been in such incredible demand since they first became available in September that Apple has had trouble making enough units to keep up with demand, most notably demand for the larger, 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus,”

Actually, the wait time for the iPhone 6 Plus has gone from “2 to 3 weeks” to “7 to 10 business days” (effectively 1 1/2 to 2 weeks) within the last week. Meanwhile the wait time for the iPhone 6 has stayed at “7 to 10 business days” for the last month.

Thus it seems that Apple is *slowly* catching up on demand for the iPhone 6 Plus while not making much headway on the iPhone 6.

As usual these analysts are using old data and/or are just making stuff up.

  4. Well now that I’m in my 50s I like my iPhone 6 and everything about it. The only gripe is that I wish all the apps would work with the larger text I changed in settings. But no big deal because when I need to, I pull out my iPad 3, that is until I get my iPad Air 2 for Christmas. Life is good.

  5. Personally i hope that next year when apple drops the 5s and 5c from the line up they make something in the size range of the iphone 5-5s-5c as well as likely will be called the 7 and 7 plus.
My reasining is there are lots of people i have heard saying the love the 6 and the new specs but they prefer the smaller phone and said they have handled the 6 in the store and did not really like it that much.
Personlaly i got a 6 plus but am still debating on it vs the 6.
BUt i think all 3 zsizes would pretty much meet all demands you have small medium and large. Ten you have the ipad mini and the ipad air.

I didnt think id like the mini for tablet but i got one for my mom for christmas and was loading apps on it and using it. Its actually quite nice. I think i prefer the air but the mini is a nice size for things too
