Open thread: Does iPhone 6 Plus kill iPad mini, iPad Air sales?

We’ve just received an email that prompts an open thread to iPhone 6 Plus owners:

Dear MacDailyNews,

I own an iPad Air and an iPhone 6 Plus. I have not touched my iPad Air since my iPhone 6 Plus arrived.

I am a huge Apple fan and, through my business, I also have the ability to write-off my technology purchases. I am also an Apple shareholder. I’m a great example of someone who would concoct pretty much any reason to own both devices. However – and as an Apple shareholder, this is concerning – if I had an iPhone 6 Plus first, I would struggle to find a compelling reason to ever buy an iPad.

If, after just two weeks with my iPhone 6 Plus, I am struggling to find a reason, this bodes very, very poorly for Apple’s iPad Air – and near certain death for iPad mini. IBM had better do an excellent job of quickly moving iPad into the enterprise!

Now that I have my Plus and have used it extensively, it is very doubtful that I will ever buy another iPad unless or until there is a 12-inch iPad that weighs a 1.25 pounds (566 grams) or less.

Again, I am the very person most likely to buy both an iPhone 6 Plus and an iPad. I don’t see how people with different budgetary concerns (buying these devices with their own discretionary income) will ever buy both an iPhone 6 Plus and any iPad. At this point, from what I’ve experienced, every iPhone Plus that Apple sells very likely means no future iPad sale and almost certainly kills future iPad mini sales.

Sincerely,

James W.

MacDailyNews Take: iPhone 6 Plus owners, do you agree? Does iPhone 6 Plus kill your need for an iPad mini and/or iPad Air?

  1. In addition, once iPad mini gains the A8 and M8 processors those gamers and photographers and simple work applications will feel a heck of a lot better on a iPad mini then on a iPhone Plus… simple as that.

    1. Furthermore, the day Apple gets things really really really right will be the day the latest chips are offered across all devices at the same time. Rather sad to not see this; A8 M8 in the AppleTV and iPad mini. Should be either optional to buy this way or just offered as the new device. A9 64 bit is on its way… shall see quad core or octal core offered soon. weeeeee

  2. For right now I don’t see my iPhone 6 plus as a replacement for my iPad. This may change as we get App updates that take advantage of increased resolution are released to make the 6 plus more iPad like. However, I just feel like the 6 plus is a smaller tablet than I would like to use in general. To be honest I’d like to throw away my phone and have a full sized iPad with full phone capabilities I could take it with me everyplace. In reality these are all different sized tablets. In the future I would like my 3 devices to be my iPad with phone capabilities, my Apple watch, and my updated Mac Mini that’ll be out in a couple of weeks. I’ll use the mac as my personal cloud to serve my other devices and will be a very happy camper.

  3. I have iMac Macbook Air, iPad 2 , Mac Pro , iPad Mini Retina . IPhone 5S and iPhone 6 Plus
I use all of them with the least used being the iPad 2 followed by the Macbook Air
What I don’t own in my regular house is a TV. Actually technically that is not true as I have a UEB TV hooked up to iMac and Mac Pro and I do have a samsung flatscreenwhich has not been turned on in years

  4. I have the iPad Air and the iPad mini Retina. Love ’em both for different apps and situations but when I get the 6 Plus, I won’t need the mini and will pass it on over to my wife who’s using the first-gen mini but I’ll certainly hold onto the Air.

I often tend to use the Air as a mini laptop with a BT keyboard and I can get a lot of work done with it (including spreadsheet work) that I can’t (or don’t want to do) with the mini and certainly won’t with the 6 Plus.

For me, it’ll be the MBA 13″ (with the 27″ Thunderbolt displays at home and at work), iPad Air and iPhone 6 Plus. Perfect progression to cover all the bases as far as I’m concerned. The mini would be a little redundant within that group. I may still want a mini later when the weight comes down to around 8 ounces or less.

  5. I will chime in and say….

I own an iPad. I got an iPad mini, my BIG IPad has not been touched since.

My iPhone 6+ is on it’s way this week.

I gotta feeling my iPad mini will no longer be “falling on my face” at night.

I think I’m gonna miss my iPad mini.
    😉

  6. I think James W has a real point, and there are a lot of people who will agree.

In the end, however, it will depend a lot on the use case.
1 – not everybody wants to carry around a Plus all the time. So for millions, it is not an issue.

2 – for those who do get a 6 Plus, probably most will agree with James. Of those, many never were going to get an iPad anyway.

3 – There will also be those who really need the larger screen.
    + poor vision
    + data base entry
    + photographers
    + DJs
    + graphic artists
+ road warriors who need “almost a laptop”
    + sales people
    + cats

  7. DEFINITELY NOT!!!!
I have an iPhone 6 Plus and can’t wait till next week to find out about the new iPads. I would prefer an iPad Pro but I am ready to buy a new iPad. My iPad is iPad 3 and it is time for a change.

My iPhone 6 Plus is my mobile, on the go device. The iPad is my at home device which I use frequently because of the bigger screen.
No canibalization of the iPad in my house.

  8. I have not found my use patters change much at all. I use the device that’s closest at hand. I do find I don’t take my IPad Air out with me as much. When arround the house I prefer my iPad when I’m mobile I prefer my iPhone 6 Plus.
My wifes habits are about the same. She sticks with her Mini at home and relies on the phone when mobile.
For me it’s the right mix of the right tools for the job. I now have 3 hammers each designed to help with the appropriate task. Iphone, iPad and MacBook Air…If you asked me to give up one I would decline!

  9. The iPad mini might not be the best for Apple’s margins, but it’s been an amazing product for my girlfriend in Hong Kong. Not only could she afford it (very low wage job), but the quality of the device has been stellar to improving our communication.

  10. I disagree totally. I have both a iPhone 6 plus and an iPad mini. I am occasionally reading on the iPhone while out (waiting in queues etc) but still use my iPad mini extensively. And as for it replacing the iPad air, I don’t think that is likely to be the case as the uses are quite different.

  11. An iPad is still much better for music apps like live mixers, and better for online engineering modeling sites. I couldn’t imagine doing that on a screen smaller than an iPad

  12. You have to look at the age group.

The above forties may not buy a laptop or desktop but will certainly buy the iPad for everyday use.

My rationale has to do with eye sight.

the below forties don’t need reading glasses as much as the above forties.

  13. I was thinking about getting an iPhone 6+ instead of an iPad. Then I realised I could use the iOS 8 Continuity and Hand Off features with my iPhone 5S (in my pocket) and an iPad. Best of both worlds with no compromise with an oversized phone.

  14. Yes, but to be honest I’ve been using my iPad less and less anyway. Admittedly I only have an iPad 1, but I just don’t find any real reason to use it. I cannot use an iPad for work. When I’m out my iPhone is perfect – I don’t want to carry another device, most of the time I don’t want to carry anything more than what I can get in my pockets. At home, again my iPhone is fine, and I also have my iMac which I use all the time.

I can still see a market, especially in families, but there is definitely an overlap.

  15. If I didn’t use my iPad 2 as a comic reader I’d have an iPad mini. And I can see how the iPhone 6 Plus could be an iPad mini replacement.

So yes, if it weren’t for my particular circumstances I could probably survive easily with only a 6 Plus.

  16. This is one man’s obsession with a new device. iPhone 6 Plus is big, but it’s not big enough to make me want to stop using an iPad. Even if it was, it wouldn’t matter to me anyway since I didn’t get an iPhone 6 Plus. I have the 4.7 inch model. I still use my iPad mini. If anything has caused me to not use my iPad mini as much it would be the lousy performance of iOS 8 on my less than two year old iPad mini. It really pisses me off that Apple could be so sloppy that they didn’t bother to optimize the new OS better to run on an older iPad. The iPad mini is (currently) only in its second generation. It’s not like I tried to load iOS 8 on something really old.

  17. I personally cannot wait for the next generation iPad mini with touch ID support. The iPhone 6 Plus is a little too big for me as a daily driver, but I just love, love, love the touch ID in the iPhone 6. The new iPad mini will be the perfect size tablet once it supports touch ID ;-)!

  18. I like the initiator of the thread am an Apple guy (47 Macs starting in 1985), every generation of iPad,both full size and mini and I totally disagree with his premise. And almost every generation of iPhone. (By staggering eligibility with my daughter and handing phones down to her.

I like my devices optimized for their primary use and how you use devices and which you use depends on what you do. The iPad does not replace my 15″ retina MacBook pro. Which in turn does not replace my new MacPro for doing Final Cut Pro. The iPhone at any size does not replace the iPad..

Frankly I would rather have a smaller iPhone than even the 6 but of course with the latest technology and hope with the 7 there is a third option that is smaller..

  20. No – I will still use iPad at home for reading etc, just won’t take it with me as my iPhone 6 plus is great for my out and about needs. And will still buy new iPad at some point.
