Apple updates Apple Watch video with noticeably smaller display

“Apple re-uploaded its Apple Watch introduction video to YouTube today with a few small changes to the design of the device,” Mike Beasley reports for 9to5Mac.

“It seems the company’s initial renders of the watch were not as accurate as they could have been, as the new version—which also appears on Apple.com now—sports a noticeably smaller screen,” Beasley reports. “The change, which was spotted by an eagle-eyed 9to5Mac reader, was likely made to bring the watch seen in the video closer in line with the real device.”

Beasley reports, “The images in the Apple Watch gallery haven’t been updated, but they’ve always had the same design that was introduced to the video today.”

  1. I notice that the smaller Watch is being used in much of the revised video. I can see this as a positive change. The original presentation was about the big Watch with the smaller Watch as incidental. Considering the hilarity of the brick-on-a-wrist nature of certain other ‘smart’ watches, it’s a great idea to focus on the smaller Watch as the default. It clearly is an entirely normal sized watch. You can get the bigger version if you want to. That’s a much nicer approach at pummeling the competition. They don’t have a nice smaller ‘smart’ watch! 😀

    1. Also, I wonder if Apple did this to appeal to a broader base… not everyone wants a HUGE watch face (or in the case of a smart watch, a HUGE screen) on their wrist.

Also, I wonder if the pricing structure will be different for different sized screens or if Apple will offer both for the same price so as not to insinuate that one is “cheaper” than the other, when it is really just personal preference.

    1. First! First! First! We were first!

You know, I wouldn’t really hate Samscum as much for throwing things at the wall to see what sticks (vs. Apple’s approach) if each of those products thrown at the wall were of the same fit and finish of Apple’s products and had the same level quality, care, and thoughtfulness applied during their design. But alas, a copy machine produces only copies… it can’t recreate the original.

      1. I do not believe that it is possible for an organization that is producing many different smartphones and tablets and “throwing things at the wall to see what sticks” to produce products that are comparable to Apple’s devices in terms of design, fit, and finish, quality, thoughtfulness, etc.

Apple says “no” to many things to focus attention on fewer, but greater things. Apple takes the time to carefully consider the ecosystem in which a product fits and the manner in which consumers will utilize it. Apple is willing to arrive in a market later and take the time to develop a truly great and complete product. The copiers rush to get to market first with ill-considered wares, caring far more about being “first” than being the best, as if that will somehow enable them to steal the position of industry innovator and leader away from Apple.

Unless the company is Apple, it will not produce products like Apple. Someday, another company might manage to approximately duplicate Apple’s “formula” for greatness. So far, however, nearly every business still focuses on profits as the goal rather than delighting the consumer. Will they ever learn?

  2. Showing one size over another is both bad and good. You’ll promote the benefits of one but may discourage potential customers for the other size. In any case, all the ‘news’ for the Apple Watch until it is actually being sold is basically showing an unfinished (although rather polished) prototype. Think concept car that may/may not end up being mass-produced in the form currently being shown.

  3. Just noticed this but in the vid it looks like the flat surface of the crown is red when they were showing it with the red strap. Are there plans to have multiple versions with different crown colors too? Or maybe some kind of sticker so you can match the strap you use?
