iFixit teardown: Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus includes chips from Qualcomm, Skyworks, others

“Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus uses chips from Qualcomm, Skyworks Solutions, Avago Technologies and other companies, according to gadget repair firm iFixit, which pried one of the devices open in Melbourne early on Friday,” Noel Randewich reports for Reuters.

“Like previous iPhones, the iPhone 6 Plus uses a Qualcomm 4G LTE modem, according to iFixit,” Randewich reports. “Dissembling the device in a Mac repair shop after lining up overnight to buy a phone, iFixit technicians also discovered a Murata wifi module, a Broadcom touchscreen controller, and chips from Skyworks, Avago and TriQuint.”

“The NFC chip in the iPhone 6 Plus comes from NXP Semiconductors,” Randewich reports. “NXP also supplies a motion co-processor, key to making the iPhone’s sensors work without draining its battery, iFixit said. As in other iPhones, Apple has designed its own main processor with technology licensed from ARM Holdings and in this device it is the A8 chip.”

    A more descriptive revision of that phrase:
    A Qualcomm ‘4G’ LTE modem.

    We’re still waiting for someone on the planet to implement actual, standards compliant 4G mobile technology. Marketing blether be damned. They be scurvy maggots, the worst of ’em! Arr.

      1. I haven’t followed it closely enough to understand the background. There has been an undercurrent of mythologizing for centuries whereby the royal line of kingship in Scotland will be restored (a sect of the Masons). I suspect such silliness will continue. There’s one motivator.

        What has resulted will be, I believe, very beneficial to Scotland as they will be handed further autonomy. That’s going to be a good thing. From what little I know about the situation, I didn’t see total independence as viable or preferable.

    1. Why make a true 4G compliant phone until someone builds a true 4G compliant network to use it on? Which has to come first??? This was Apple’s argument about 3G and Edge in the first iPhone. AT&T’s network simply was not up to supporting a 3G compliant phone, so why build in the capability. When AT&T reached 10% of its network in urban areas, Apple released the iPhone 3, with 3G capability.

        I agree. It’s amusing that the industry’s marketing pushed their way into calling high end 3G “4G”. Then no one bothered (so far) to create actual 4G networks. I have no idea why. There were promises, rumors, then nothing. The hardware for real 4G networks has been around for at least a year. If someone understands this odd situation, please post!

          I think what you have here is that 3.75G masquerading as 4G is what most people consider “good enough” to get the job done. So do the carriers who really don’t want to make the investment to please those few who want “better” and “best” that true 4G can give them. 3.75G is sufficient to stream movies . . . most of the time. . . and it handles most of what the internet can throw at mobile devices, now. So why spend billions of dollars to upgrade to 4G. They’ll do that when people demand more from their mobile browsing. . . and that means iOS users, certainly not Android where the vast majority don’t really use the internet.

  2. iFixIt has been the champion of going back to every function on a daughter card and mother card upgradability and every chip mounted on a ZIF and every display being able to have individual pixels repaired. Everything must be screwed together with slot head screws or perhaps even those new fangled Philips screw.

    Integration is here to stay so get with the times or go away.
