Jean-Louis Gassée: Misunderstanding Apple

“Fred Wilson’s prediction of Apple’s imminent fall and rumors of Apple’s purchase of Beat Electronics: These are both manifestations of what I’ll call, for lack of a better term, Misunderstanding Apple,” Jean-Louis Gassée writes for Monday Note.

“First, Fred Wilson. At the recent TechCrunch Disrupt conference, the successful and articulate venture investor predicted that by 2020 Apple will no longer hold the #1 position in the tech world. They won’t even be in the top three. According to Wilson, Apple ‘doesn’t think about things they way they need to think about things.’ Specifically, the company is ‘too rooted in hardware… [which] is increasingly becoming a commodity’ and ‘Their stuff in the cloud is largely not good. I don’t think they think about data and the cloud,'” Gassée writes. “I’d be surprised by Wilson’s facile, insight-free truisms, except this isn’t the first time he’s shown a blind spot when considering Apple. Wilson is famous for dumping his Apple shares at $91 in January 2009; AAPL is now at $590 or so. (He also sold Google, which closed at $528 on Friday, for a split-adjusted $160. Perhaps there’s a difference between being a venture investor, an insider who watches and influences a young company, and an outsider subjected to forces and emotions outside of one’s control.)”

“I was still on the road when I read about the rumored $3.2B acquisition of Beats Electronics, the company that began in the headphone business and then spawned a streaming music service. I’m puzzled. If the rumors prove true, Apple may be guilty of misunderstanding itself,” Gassée writes. “I don’t see how such an acquisition would enhance Apple’s business model or reputation.”

  1. Dr. Dre can get Al Gore so hos to heat him up to deal with Global Cooling, now that the warming has gone away. Al won’t have to hit up the masseuses for freebies. Dr. Dre is connected and gets the bitches to do what he says or they get a beating by the gangsta brothers.

      1. Did Al Gore stop attacking masseuses and I did not get the memo?

Did Al explain the fact there has been zero warming in global temperatures in the past 17 years despite large inputs of the evil greenhouse gases? I missed his explanation of why it is cooling now. You can explain it to me for him so he can get back to his rubdown.

        1. Global warming isn’t quite as literal as you make out indeed where we are it will mean exceptional cold winters and more rain along with warmer Summers. The interactions are exceptionally complex though the unprecedented spilling of cold water from the polar ice cap announced today doesn’t give me the same confidence in the concept being imaginary as you. I guess those who follow us will be the judges though Im sure many will claim its simply some megalomaniac god or other reaping revenge on us for our sins. No complexity in that argument.

          1. Yes, the interactions are “extremely complex.” So complex that a man, Al Gore, who is incapable of finding voluntary female companionship, cannot specify precisely what the temperatures will be tomorrow, much less in 3 or 5 years, or what the effect will be of humans cutting back on use of very efficient fuel sources like gasoline and natural gas and coal. Gore is a complete doofus who makes money off selling stupid ideas to people who are bigger doofuses than he is. Which is taking doofusdom to new levels.

And nothing that is being done in the name of global warming (now maybe cooling) will achieve anything that is promised. The people who promoted “global warming” declared with certainty that the warming would happen and would produce disaster. Now, it is complex. And the disaster is “cooling”. In other words these people are totally clueless?

            1. it is much worse when a complete idiot repeats idiocy than when someone with education repeats something incessantly

i vote you off the island

            2. Yes Al Gore and the scientific whores who make up science to get fat government grants by saying the sky is falling and we will all did are idiots. And those who fall for all these doomsday apocalyptic threats are doubly idiots

            3. You certainly don’t have any scientifically valid data to refute the scientifically valid theories that show global warming is happening.

(BTW, you absolutely *cannot* guess my political affiliation based on the above. I’m probably more right wing than you are.)

            4. @globalwarming – how about 17 years of zero global waming – which is contrary to all the predictions made by Al Gore – as evidence. The dire threat is that the temperature will go up and the seas will rise and we will all die. Are you too dense to understand that 17 years of flat and lower temperatures and the predictions not coming true represents “evidence”? How stupid are you?
