Apple to release ‘larger size’ iPhone in May, 12.9-inch iPad next October

“Apple is rumored to release a 12.9-inch tablet in October 2014, targeting North America’s educational market, according to sources from the upstream supply chain,” Aaron Lee and Joseph Tsai report for DigiTimes.

“Apple’s large-size tablet will be manufactured by Quanta Computer, and was originally expected to adopt either 12.9- or 13.3-inch panels, with recent rumors indicating that 12.9-inch has a better chance to be picked, the sources noted,” Lee and Tsai report. “In addition to tablets, Apple is also rumored to be planning a larger size iPhone for May 2014, using a 20nm processor manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the sources noted.”

  1. I predict a “larger screen iPhone” with the same physical dimensions as the current iPhone. Obviously that means the borders on the top and bottom will be no more, or greatly reduced. The problem of the home button in such a scenario I have not yet solved…

      1. That is what the article says, but I don’t buy the “education” aspect. Schools in Texas are so cheap that they try to save a few bucks by going with a crappy non-Apple tablet. I cannot see any public school in this state being willing to buy/lease an even larger, more expensive tablet.

A larger iPad May have a role at private schools or at universities. But public schools? Perhaps they might be subsidized for the teachers and administrators, but that is a rather small audience compared to students.

  2. Definitely see an iPad Pro and a large screened 5c (not 5s) in the near future.

Along with the iPad Pro, support for multi-touch trackpads will be added to iOS 7. The iPad Pro will mark the first step towards releasing an iOS based laptop and desktop all-in-one to replace traditional PCs.

  3. I don’t see the point in a larger iPad. May as well move to a TV.

There won’t be a larger iPhone in May. October would be a possibility, but with Apple just signing a deal with China Mobile and finally catching up on initial 5S demand, Apple wouldn’t have the capacity to produce enough iPhone 5C, 5S, and 6 while still fulfilling the initial rush that will come when China Mobile offers the iPhone.
