Woz: I never criticized Apple’s new iPads, reporters got it wrong

“When my colleague David Street shared a now-viral UK media story reporting Steve Wozniak’s disappointment in the new Apple iPad yesterday — the report included a variety of direct Wozniak quotes deriding the latest iPad — I did a double take,” Gina Smith reports for aNewDomain. “The actual words in the quotes just didn’t sound like the Steve Wozniak I know… the British story sounded all wrong — not just the words but also the general attitude and sentiment.”

“You see, I know Steve’s way of speaking. I spent nearly two years interviewing Steve Wozniak for our book, the memoir iWOZ: How I Invented the Personal Computer, Co-Founded Apple, and Had Fun Doing It,” Smith reports. “So I emailed Steve and asked him if he actually said what UK and U.S. news stories claim.”

I never criticized the new iPads. I think they are fine. I don’t think you have a choice between iPad models, so that’s just saying that the iPad is good… that’s a very different statement (and contrary to the implication) that, if I chose not to upgrade now, less than a year after my last upgrade, then I, Woz, am saying that the new Apple iPad is bad. – Steve Wozniak

Smith reports, “Reporters were to blame, he told me. In Wozniak’s experience, the UK press has shown itself to be ‘the worst in the world for mischaracterizing what I say.'”

    1. The legend’s back! What Woz said must have gotten lost in translation. Like when Minka told me to get the hell away from her front door. I took that as an “I love you.”

    2. @BLN. If you check your history (US histories sometimes don’t get around to mentioning this) Virginia was once the preferred destination for convict transportation.

  1. Right; wonder why would anyone think that Mr. Wozniak would be critical of any products from Apple. After all he has a fabulous track record of never undermining Steve Jobs’s offerings. Woz was never jealous of the man’s runaway success as a tech visionary, even when it was evident to all and sundry that Jobs’s was CLEALY inferior to Woz’s mad tech skills.

    Indeed, those crazy journalists.

  2. Its a long list of Brit media naysayers…
The BBC…there is definitely an agenda against Apple and pro Samsung. Also outrageously PRO Microsoft…they have a software deal!
The Daily Mail and Mailonline…provocative baseless crap like “iPad ate my dog”. Right wing and reactionary.
The Telegraph…pretty much pure lies. Very right wing but both pro- and anti- the US if it suits them.
The Guardian gets it right and wrong in the same article…mostly hilarious but the comments are from troll central.
The Register…what more can be said?
The Express…same as the Mail but even more useless.
The Times…it’s Rupert Murdoch so what more can I say.
The Financial Times…endlessly repeats ‘market share’ meme so it spares every effort possible to do real financial reporting.
Which magazine…like Consumer Reports but even less intelligent content and doesn’t understand technology.
The Gadget Show…like Top Gear it constantly picks up the wrong end of a stick to prove a baseless point…for entertainment.

It’s punishment time since Apple doesn’t pay them enough to change their tune.

  3. I cannot understand “I don’t think you have a choice between iPads so if I choose not to upgrade that means they are good.” I think the reporter should have said, “huh?” It could be the 70s calling and asking for their LSD and blue boxes back.

  4. You know? I met Woz a couple of weeks ago. Whomever bashes him is just clueless. He’s AMAZING. The stories he tell, the knowledge he has, the respect he shows to others… He’s like the nicest guy. He engages to his fans, spend time talking, and he’s 100% down to Earth guy.

As a token of his view he told me: “When we released the Apple II, I though this was the ultimate personal computer. Then we launched the Mac, and it was way better and bigger than the Apple II and I thought this was the ultimate personal computer. And then Steve launched the iPhone, and I think the iPhone is beyond the Apple II and the Mac. It is the ultimate personal computer. My favorite is the iPhone 4. it was really and engineering product.”

So there’s no jealousy for the products Steve Jobs released. He acknowledged the Mac was better than the Apple II.

I can’t have anything but the biggest respect for Woz. He’s still amazing. And bashers…. well… there’s a reason why Woz is Woz and bashers are… nobodies.

  5. One of the best qualities of Apple is that they do not sell junk that one needs to be thrown out every year, lest we strip-mine the planet. Last year’s iPad gets passed down to the next family member until all the fighting stops.

Woz is misunderestimating (sic) 64bit class apps with zero lag in the tablet form factor. If it were not for Jobs, Woz would be tolerant of all kinds of engineering faults and everything would be super laggy bloated beta tech. So don’t ask an engineer about zero lag, because you will just get a treatise of why there must be lag, and the spirit of Jobs lives on to say no.
