Is this the polycarbonate shell of the rumored low-cost Apple iPhone?

“It’s been whispered about for a while now, but the [below] image allegedly shows the never before seen, rear shell of the rumoured budget iPhone,” Tactus reports.

“It looks like it features an all uniform plastic polycarbonate shell – very different to the iPhone 5′s sleek aluminium look, but still modern and covetable,” Tactus reports. “”

Tactus reports, “The plastic shell measures in at 0.4-0.6mm thick, however the actual phone might be around 9mm thick, 120mm in height and around 62-65mm in width, which means it’s likely both taller and wider than the iPhone 4/4S.”

  1. eh….woulda been nice not to have a heavy chunka glass and metal in my pocket all day….Oh wait…I ALREADY DON’T…and I’ve got a nice texturized rubber backing that keeps my LG Spectrum 2 from falling out of my hands and pockets. And even when I am a colossal clutz, my forgivingly plastic phone hits the hard floor and disassembles itself into 3 parts–the face, the battery and that wonderful rubberized backing. Three snaps later. UmBakinBidness.

Funny how when your not constantly worried about dropping your phone, how infrequently you drop it…..What’s uuuuuuuuup wit daaaa-aaaa-aaaaaaaaat!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! ha haa hee haa ahee ahem…………
Apples’ still in my wallet though. Just paid $94 dollars tuesday to get my daughter’s cracked iphone fixed.

Guess she needs to put one of those huuuuuuge cases on it to protect it from being sexy and natural earthly forces like gravity and…..toilets—-F!@#ing Isaac Newton!!!!

  2. I think the “budget iPhone” should be based on the most recent iPod nano OS and design. If Apple is going to make a cheaper iPhone, it needs to be distinct from THE iPhone. Why would Apple want to produce a product that makes much less profit per unit, that cannibalizes sales from Apple’s highly successful fully-subsidized iPhone? They wouldn’t…

So, the low-cost iPhone needs to be a product that is cool and “covetable” but obviously NOT a “real” iPhone. No one who wants an iPod touch would buy an iPod nano instead, but the iPod nano is still quite popular for its own reasons… Make it distinctly smaller, and have great built-in apps, but not the capability to add new apps. It should do everything a customer expects from a modern “feature” phone, but with Apple’s typical user experience advantages.

    1. Agreed. an inexpensive iPhone – should be a much Simpler Smartphone. With the core Apple Apps – a Browser, a Music player, a Camera/Video and of course a Phone.
No third party Apps to add-on. Perhaps Siri driven, yet, again as command-able functions rather than assistant like help. An All-Apple phone – running the latest iOS.

In addition, iPad mini/phone should be the phone to fill the gap for those who seek larger screens / those who wish a ALL in One Device to travel; big enough to do work.

In fact, Apple could clarify it’s offerings into 3 options.

SMALL: being (iPodTouch & iPhone size)
      MEDIUM: being (iPad mini size)
      LARGE: being (iPAd size)

And offer these sizes as a PHONE (iPhone) OR TABLET (iPad).
A Tablet would be classified as WIFI only.
While a Phone is classified with telephone CELLULAR.

      HENCE,

iPHONE: Small / Medium / Large
      (each available in 32Gb ,64Gb, 128Gb)

      OR

iPAD: Small / Medium / Large
      (each available in 32Gb ,64Gb, 128Gb)

a Phone, a Music player, a Browser and a Camera.

Apple can succeed in producing an inexpensive Phone that is pure Apple App driven. Merely using core Apple apps – no games or third party instalments. A simpler Smartphone… perhaps with only 4 icons. Perhaps with only ONE button or icon… Siri. Siri embedded on a chip devised to control and navigate all Apple Apps. Simpler to use, simpler to upgrade… simply smarter.

      Think Differentiating.

  3. There is more of Tactus logo on there than Apple’s so this is probably fake. I think it would be a grave mistake to make a low cost iPhone. Maybe not at first but in the long term.

  4. Hope this is real. With the smaller 3.5″ screen, this is perfect for a lot of people, in terms of size, price and durability. I love the plastic casing. I think the iPhone 5 was a disaster for a myriad of reasons. The ergonomics with all the sharp edges, the painted on anodized color was amateur hour and the materials are nowhere near as luxurious as the iPhone 4. It was a step back. The iPhone 4 was the epitome of gorgeous perfection.

If real, with the smaller screen this can be a true iPhone mini. Hopefully they also release the previously rumored larger iPhone or rather, math as bad translation called it.

  5. They might as well reuse the 3GS case. — nicer than this cheap looking case. IMHO I would take the 4S and replace the back glass with aluminum or another appropriate, less expensive material.
