NPD: 7.9-inch iPad mini set to eclipse 9.7-inch iPad; Apple doubles production for Christmas quarter

“The iPad Mini appears to be on its way to eclipsing the Retina iPad, according to NPD DisplaySearch,” Brooke Crothers reports for CNET.

“Apple had originally expected to sell 6 million iPad Minis in 2012. But that’s turning out to be a laughably low forecast, according to DisplaySearch analyst David Hsieh,” Crothers reports. “Now, Apple is asking display panel makers to ‘ship more than 12 million’ iPad Mini displays in the fourth quarter, Hsieh said in a research note.”

Crothers reports, “‘The iPad Mini apparently is selling better’ than the new iPad 4, Hsieh said in response to an e-mail query. ‘It seems people especially like the size…[it’s] lighter, slimmer and easier to carry.’ In 2013, the iPad Mini could account for half of all iPad shipments, which DisplaySearch says should reach 100 million.”

  1. And yet they use the FUD to push Apple stock lower to buy it up at extremely ridiculous low price now. They used a drop in target price to $700 as bad news. Hello, isn’t that about a 36% upside from this pounded down price!

    I am all in now!

      1. Ah, the old one-trick pony is back pontificating once more! Gawd, but I would LOVE to see your stock portfolio, AP. If you’re the genius you *think* you are, there must be a couple of thousand AAPL “puts” there right now, eh? You know, the old money where your mouth is thing. Truth be told, betcha you ain’t got a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. (Basements are difficult domiciles from which to dispose of one’s ordure, right AP?) So, you’re just throwing your crap around here and there so’s you can feel better about yourself. Still, I’d LOVE to put a wager of real money on the table with you face-to-face about your “400” scenario. Anonymity protects you from such confrontation though, doesn’t it? How truly lucky you are.

  2. Yes, an iPad Mini with a Retina display, Full color gamut, and A6 or variant processor- Major sales rush.
Then the form factor change for the iPad that matches the iPad Mini, Retina , A7, and a dose of IGZO.

    Major thermonuclear response.

  3. I tried the Mini at the Apple Retail store when I picked up my iPhone 5. It feels really great. So much lighter than the full size, I can see why people are buying. I’d like to have both sizes for different uses.

  4. The Windows Surface RT launch window and iPad mini going on sale is about a week apart. Both are new releases of a never before seen product, creating new tablet categories in their own right.

And yet Microsoft is struggling to move 100,000 Surface RT tablets vs. 26 million iPad minis for the Christmas quarter. Where are the IT doofuses who were supposed to buy the Surface RT in truckloads for corporate consumption hiding????

      1. Yes, but this was supposed to be the iPad killer, the ARM tablet that had Microsoft Office installed by default so you could get in with your work merely by clicking open the built in stand.

Because the iPad with 275,000 tablet optimised apps didn’t have the one office productivity suite that corporate IT was waiting for!!!!

  5. Shorting and making a killing, although my short cover target is approaching possibly by the end of the day today. I however will not go long until capitulation which we may see shortly.

UBS price target cut is the blame for today’s nosedive. Expect more analysts to follow. Sub $500 appears to be when, not if. Don’t be fooled by the headline – iPad mini’s selling better than iPad 4 is actually bad news due to its lower profit margin.

  6. Nice $400 stock. I stopped buying somewhere between $320-340 and sold a block at a little over $400. Hope none of you got torched buying when it was all amped up earlier this year.

Nice $400 stock and only $109 to go.

Yeah, sure. Prove it, sir. PROVE IT. Anybody can ride an Arabian stallion and profess to be Sultan here on the internet, can’t he, Agent Pee? Yeah, YOU’RE the genius, WE’RE the fools. We should ALL be more like you, huh? Damn, but it must be hard to wear a hat with your head so grandly inflated!
