How many iPad minis will Apple sell in its first weekend?

Analysts’ estimates for Apple’s first weekend of iPad mini Wi-Fi-only sales “range from 800,000 to 3 million,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

“Topeka Capital’s Brian White: 800,000 to 1 million in first weekend,” P.E.D. reports. “BTIG’s Walter Piecyk: Apple must sell 3 million in first weekend to demonstrate to Wall Street that there is adequate demand and that management can ramp up to meet it.”

  1. At my local Apple Store (Portland, Oregon) yesterday, they were all sold out by noon. I asked the Apple Store representative if they received an initial amount similar to the iPhone 5 and he said no it was much less, so I think the supply constraints are real.

  2. I’d believe that.

Was at Walmart and bestbuy last night, Walmart sales guy… They sold 1 all day. Their case was full of them. Sold iPad full size though.

I’ve seen the pictures of the lines, the mini will sell decent, but it’s not nearly the same as a full size iPad.

2 things though I must point out.
A: it’s wifi only for sale ATM.
B: anecdotal, many people probably just preordered like usual.

  3. How many…? That’s easy. Apple will sell however many they produced for the pre-orders and first weekend store sales.

The new iPod touch also seems to be selling well, based on what the local Apple Store had left in stock (not much – only the more expensive config in a few colors). They are also very cool – Apple should called it “iPad nano.”

  4. Got my mini via UPS yesterday, and I just can’t put the thing down. My heavy-as-a-rock retina iPad sits there all alone devoid of attention. At a soirée tonight everybody wanted to handle the mini, not so the retina iPad.

This thing is gonna sell by the boatloads once Apple gets production cranking. I think it is going to be a mini Apple Christmas!
