“In the market for a new iPhone or iPad, but haven’t yet settled on a storage capacity?” John Paczkowski asks for AllThingsD. “Here’s something to consider as you mull the 16GB, 32GB or 64GB question.”
“ABI Research recently surveyed the iOS app ecosystem and found that as of September the average app size was 23 megabytes,” Paczkowski reports. “That’s 16 percent more than it was in March. Now that’s the average size across all categories. The increase in the Games category was even greater. In September, the average game weighed in at 60MB, up 42 percent from March (Android’s average app size saw a 10 percent jump in size over the same period).”
Why?
• Graphics for the Retina displays on new iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch units
• The increase in over-the-air app download limit to 50MB from 20MB in March
• The proliferation of universal apps designed for both iPhone and iPad

PC games used to come on one floppy disk, now they come on a couple of DVDs.
That’s MORE than 16%….
Just know that if your app is not awesome in every way, and your taking up over 20mb, your in line to be deleted off my phone or not bought in the first place. 3D games no more then 1GB unless its nova 3… lol

Expect it to keep getting worse. Retina assets are brutal. I feel even more sorry to iPad 2 owners who will have to live with these larger apps with no benefit to them.
