Apple’s refined iOS 6 highlighted by stunning Maps overhaul

“Every iOS release has its marquee feature, and with iOS 6 it’s unquestionably Maps,” Dan Moren reports for Macworld. “The app has gotten a in-depth makeover, perhaps the most thorough ever to be applied to one of iOS’s built-in applications.”

“The bow-to-stern overhaul starts deep under the hood, where Apple has replaced the mapping engine that in every previous version of iOS was provided by Google,” Moren reports. “In its place, Apple has rolled its own solution, supported by mapping data from GPS maker Tom Tom, OpenStreetMap, and a cast of thousands.”

Moren reports, “As you might expect, such an all-encompassing update means new features, the disappearance of old ones, and plenty of changes in the way things have been done to date.”

  1. I sure hope Apple improved the satellite imagery soon. In my brief tour, certain areas of London were photographed with the sun so low, the shadows make it almost impossible to see any detail. Even zoomed in, it’s not as good as GMaps. Also why the fsck is the Isle of Thanet in low-res black and white? The whole area looks like a bloody building site.

This needs to be improved quickly to be a contender to GMaps.

  2. Maps might be stunning in placed where they have 3D renderings.. but the most basic functionality of directions and listings of places which was phenomenal in the older Google maps even for India is missing.
When you consider the whole package, the new maps is basically stripped down of its functionality and if Apple is going to take for the next major update i.e iOS 7 to update these features it will be disappointing.
Instead of touting the 3D models they must first have worked on maintaining existing functionality.

  3. Installed iOS 6 on my iPad yesterday. I checked the maps app out and it looks like typical unfinished 1.0 Apple Beta-ware.

Maybe they should put a bug button on it like early versions of Safari did by default.
