Why other Apple products convinced me to return my new iPad

“I bought a new third generation iPad because I really wanted to have the latest and undisputed greatest tablet on the market. I liked it, gave it a good review and couldn’t help but notice the dazzling Retina display, but I wound up taking the device back to Apple because I found myself hardly ever using it,” Larry Magid writes for Forbes.

“’m not an Apple hater. It was other Apple products that sold me on the idea of returning the iPad. I own an 11-inch MacBook Air and an iPhone 4s in addition to the first generation iPad (along with a Kindle Fire) and I simply didn’t need the new iPad,” Magid writes. “Even though I have a killer desktop PC with two large screens, more than a terabyte of storage and plenty of processing power, the MacBook Air, which I bought for travel, gets used several times a day, even when I’m at home. And the iPhone is used constantly. But that new iPad, along with the original iPad I still have, hardly ever got much use.”

MacDailyNews Take: Doesn’t know what an iPad is for or where to use it. Larry’s an anachronism stuck in a Post-PC world. If he’s happy with his iPhone and MacBook Air, that’s fine and dandy. We also have iPhones and Airs (and many more Apple Macs and devices) and you can have our iPads when you pry them from our cold, dead fingers.

  1. Actually, I can’t fault the writer. The 11-inch Air with an i7 is a really pretty powerful unit for the package. Add a Thunderbolt monitor, and have tethering from your iPhone 4S and you’re pretty complete. The iPad is a casual consumption machine and while I use a keyboard with one from time to time it’s not the same.

    1. agreed… but only if you have an iPhone and MBair.

For those who do not even have a Desktop yet or are looking to replace their PC – the iPad is a good choice. If you are a student and can not afford a MBair or you really just need a mobile unit a traveler again iPad is a great choice. Best buy the 32 or 64 Gb unit and make a clear decision on the cellular option too. But that raises you in the MBair price range.

      1. I have lately regretted my decision to buy a 27″ maxed out iMac and an iPad … I’m really starting to wish I’d bought an 11″ MB air and a cinema display to connect to it. I find myself reaching for my iPhone 4S more often than my iPad when I don’t want a full blown computer, and often wishing I had a full blown computer when I’m out of the house. If Apple ever decides to put a 4G LTE radio inside of the MB air, I will sell my iMac and my iPad and buy one of those instead.

  2. I don’t like the way MDN continually posts news stories simply to ridicule the original story or jounalist.

This is pure gutter journalism of the worst kind. I have no respect for MDN anymore.

    1. Sometimes you need to lighten up.
      MDN can be brutally funny.

But note taken – once things get rude and insulting – its a abrasive comment that just wasn’t needed. That’s the risk you take being the joker.

  3. It all comes down to the basics.

iPad handles most of what the world needs in a laptop and for many what they been using their Desktops also for.

Browsing, social networking, email, games, listening to music, watching movies, and some content creation.

Pretty much in that order. Its a comfortable device or tool to use and have. The battery life is perfect, the speed is good as well, the apps extend the device to other specifics for each individual and its just an all around great machine.

If you do have an iPhone then perhaps you will not need an iPad as well – but there is a difference for sure if you create any content – edit some photos – develop presentations on the go… that is best for the iPad. Travellers, at home on the couch, in school the iPad is perfect.

If the man has a few Apple products I trust he knows what his MBAir is good for and may not require also a iPad. I can understand that. But I doubt he is a programmer or photoshop editor or graphic designer or web developer / game developer doing much heavier work on his MBair or iPhone.

Answer, once you tire of the PC – then buy an iPad to replace it and free yourself from that dull grey room and walk all over your home enjoying the newer freedom that the PC did not have with your iPad Larry boy.

  4. Okay, It seems everyone is missing that he owns an iPad gen 1. He feels that he doesn’t need what the new iPad has to offer over the gen 1. I can accept that thinking.

My wife’s gen 1 does everything she needs. My gen 2 works just fine with my needs. The new iPad has a really cool screen but the only feature I see of value is the dictation. That is not enough for me to justify upgrading.

  5. for the work I do, I still prefer the MBA 11″ over the iPad. I’m not a big media consumer so that may be a reason also.

I still cling to my archaic newspaper for my morning news. Nothing beats paper in your hands.

I still prefer the surfing on my iPad but given that I have the iPhone 4S at hand more often, I use that. The clearer screen and the added speed of the 4S (vs the prior 3GS) really diminishes the extra step of zooming in to read small text…or the READER feature solves that issue also.

  6. I have the newest 11 Air and the iPhone 4S. I just got the AT&T LTE iPad and I use it all the time. It’s just perfect for so many things. For me it’s what I usually bring with me, when the Air is to big. I love it, and find it’s much easier to use when on the go.

  7. It’s a matter of functionality. The iPad is a consumer level device. As a professional level user, I can’t use the iPad to do all my work. I type all day, for one thing. I’m not going to type on a flat surface. Sorry. I’m also a lot more productive using other software on my MacBook and Mac server.

But the iPad sure is fun for lots of non-work stuff!

And anyway, Larry Magid already has an iPad 1 and iPhone with which to play. I don’t see any Apple or iPad disrespect in his article at all.
