Many, many MacDailyNews readers have begun informing us this morning that Apple is sending out shipping notices for their new iPad (Early 2012) orders.
We received a smattering of emails about iPad shipment notices yesterday, but a flood arrived today.
As of now, all of them state that their iPads are in Chengdu, China and that their scheduled delivery by UPS is March 16th “by end of day.”
Thanks to all who’ve let us know that their iPad orders are shipping!
Have you received your shipping notice from Apple, yet?
Mine’s in Shenzhen. Screw Chengdu.
Mine is already departing Hong Kong!
I’ve had my order confirmation which states a delivery on the 16th. Really looking forward to getting my first iPad. ヅ
Not me yet. I’m still waiting for my shipping notification email. I ordered mines like 45min after the keynote was done on Wednesday. Hopefully I get it soon.
Apple will probably send me an email later today… Your iPad will ship next month.
I never get my stuff early.
Clicked manically, ordered within an hour. No notice yet.
I’ve never understood this. How does it make sense to ship each individual item separately from China? Surely it would be more cost effective to ship them in bulk to the USA then take care of the individual orders with local shipping. Wouldn’t it?
Uhm, hello Earth to John, they’re not shipping it individually. The notices are being sent out individually but the iPads are shipped on board freighter planes in palletised form.
A nicer, more simplified explanation:
The traditional way would be to have a big shipment delivered to Apple’s warehouse, and then ship them out individually from there.
Instead, they stick the UPS labels on each iPad in China, then ship them all together in bulk. The bulk shipments land directly at UPS hubs and onto delivery trucks they go, bypassing Apple’s warehouse altogether.
Apple still pays the bulk shipping rate, just as if it was all headed to their warehouse. But since the UPS labels are already intact, no need to warehouse it.
Awesome! Another brilliant implementation from Cupertino!
Thanks for the explanation, Marty.
it’s not an apple thing. This idea has been around forever.
to clarify, they do not scan every iPad when it’s shrink wrapped to a pallet the pallet itself has a UPS internal tracking number stuck to it so when they scan it, their system acts as if every iPad on the pallet has just been scanned. This type of aggregate scanning is common practice for any big box store whether grocery/electronic/ bulk shipping.
Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand the finer points of international shipping. I guess I always just assumed since I got a tracking number for an individual package originating in China that each was sent individually.
MDN: would it kill you to name it the iPad 3?
Just because Apple/Tim Cook is a dick about naming it as such, doesn’t mean you have to be too.
You have overstayed your welcome.
If Apple/Tim Cook had named the latest iPad ‘iPad 3’, you’d be telling us they should have named it something else.
Everyone’s onto your game. Like I said previously, go file-system-check yourself.
Maybe there was a squatter who trademarked iPad3. The is already a website that is ipadhd.com Looks to be a couple of years old. Also looks that it hasn’t been updated.
My take is that future upgrades will become lesser events. What is left: NDC, haptic display and faster processor. Box likely says 3rd generation somewhere. iPod touches are not designated by thier generation in there name – only their category, touch, classic, nano, shuffle.
Sorry to learn you weren’t invited to the naming meeting. All of this unnecessary name confusion would have been avoided if they had only consulted you. 🙁
Would it kill you to just make your point without making senseless statements about people?
It is useless, BLN will not go away. I am beginning to think he is actually one of the wing nut MDN staffers just to get us all to respond.
BLN apparently has dick envy
More crap from MDN’s resident homophobic misogynist.
There’s no MacBook pro 6. Or iMac xiv. Or airport extreme 8. It’s iPad going forward. And probably just iPhone. Better for branding. Better for marketing. But I guess not better for you.
Oh boy, the resident expert is willing to share his knowledge again.
(sarcasm)
Please.
Go.
Away.
Still in Processing item…
Mine is in Vegas gambling.
Mine departed Hong Kong four hours ago.
Confirmed March 9, 2012 3:02:17!!!! Yes!
I got a shipping notice yesterday, but then I realized it was for the smart cover I ordered with my new iPad.
No shipping notice for me yet and I ordered as soon as the store went live
I wonder if certain models are shipping first? I ordered 64GB/white/Verizon and no notice yet…
Same but black. And no notice yet.
Ordered Apple TV 4pm CT, and iPad 9:45pm CT Wednesday. Both still show as “Processing:Items”., with “Delivers on March 16 Standard Shipping”.. I keep checking to see if they changed my dates. With this news today of shipping notices going out, I am hopeful to get some status change today.
I received a notice for smart cover, but I ordered my iPad to be engraved and I understand that adds a coupe of days, so no panic yet. No word on Apple TV yet.
Reminds me of a couple of years ago, ordered a MacBook and cover for a daughter headed to collage, the cover/case arrived 1st, kinda spoiled the surprise
No delay for engraving (don’t ask me how they can swing that, but they do). Mine are engraved & on their way. Smart covers arrive tomorrow (thankfully no ones having a surprise spoiled) and iPads next Friday!
My wife’s text after the announcement: “Order two”
That’s why I love her (plus a bunch of other stuff!-)
Just received notice that new iPad is shipped. Expected delivery is March 19h (Canada). First parcel will be here March 13th. Still no activity on Apple TV.
MDN – your online poll is stale. Everyone knows the answer, The New iPad! We need a new topic for speculation, and fast!
cover has shipped
64gb ATT 4g is still being processed
WAITING!
Preparing for shipment!
We ordered a Black one for me and a White for my hubby. Received notice that the Black one (mine, he he) has shipped via FedEx, not UPS, with the delivery date of March 16.
My black 64GB wifi now has a FedEx tracking #.
My new iPad is now at a UPS regional Center in Middletown, PA with a future delivery date specified. It appears that this iPad shipped from Chengdu, China prior to my pre-order. Anybody else have that experience?
Oops, that is a FedEx regional center. 🙂
Mine says:
Ship date Mar 9, 2012
Estimated delivery Mar 12, 2012 by 3:00 PM
Wow. That’s Monday. If true, we may see a lot of early deliveries all week long. Cool.
Wow, I wish. Mine is sitting in a distribution center in Nashville, TN, with a status of “Future delivery requested” and delivery date of Friday March 16th, per Apple’s request.
Maybe yours will slip through and get delivered early!
I received mine for shipment to Canada with engraving.
The wait for the conformation is a killer! >_<
Getting major horrors that something went wrong… etc!
Happy now! Just went to Preparing for Shipment! Now get to see if its the 16 or earlier!
