China’s challenge to the iPad raises a red flag

“China’s Communist Party members can now carry a tablet PC to verify identification cards, read the blogs of cadres and manage state-owned firms without fretting that using a bourgeois Apple Inc. iPad will ruin their street cred,” Melanie Lee reports for Reuters.

“Enter RedPad Number One, an Android-based tablet computer filled with software applications (apps) catered to a party official’s every need for control,” Lee reports. “Delivered in a decadent leather case for 9,999 yuan, it is twice the price of Apple’s most expensive iPad 2.”

Lee reports, “The eye-popping price has China’s microblogs alight with chatter over just why this device is so expensive and who is footing the bill.”

          WHY?
          WHO IN THE HELL
          STARTED THIS AND WHY?
THEY ACTUALLY BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS THEM .
Perhaps it is time to get out of the UN and give the tax savings back to the American workers who are having to skimp and sacrifice to pay the taxes.

    1. And how much do you think the toilet seat on the last airliner you flew on cost?

(Hint: they aren’t available at Lowes or Home Depot.)

They cost that much because they are custom made and few are produced, so there is not economy of scale. It’s not because it was a government job.

    1. for all you “sage” government critics out there who might have been outraged by this “expose'” when it first came out, if you’d put a little effort into verifying things before blathering hearsay you might have found out that the seat in question was really a waterproof cover and seat that went into military aircraft and satisfied the spec that required that it couldn’t leak if the plane went upside down. $700 is not out of line for a custom designed item like that, but it makes great headlines and gets the great uninformed masses stirred up when you call it a toilet seat.

      1. Those are typical, uninformed, knee jerk anti-goverment reactions, Zeke. You will be hearing a lot of that this year.

Few people seem to have a clue regarding government procurement processes or the cost of custom or limited run products. Economies of scale, folks.

  1. On MDN’s take, what I see there is precisely how human nature works: exploitation. Communism is the exploitation of man by man and Capitalism works the other way around. Both are compatible with human nature.

    1. “exploitation of man by man” and it works the other way around? so if you reverse man by man, you get what?……..

Maybe thats why your basic conclusion that communism and capitalism are somehow equivalent is so screwed up!

      1. No, it makes perfect sense to me – it is human natures for the powerful to exploit the less powerful every system – be it Capitalism, Communism, Confusianism, Feudalism, Anarchism is corrupted by the “haves” keeping the “have nots” in their place.

And in every system there are avenues for the poor to join the rich, but every time it’s based more on who you know rather than how hard you work. The only way to massive change is armed revolution, which of course is something the Americans share with the Chinese communists, but eventually no new rulers adopt the habits of the old…

        Just the way it is.

    1. That is because he read somewhere that the screen is too small on iPhones. Some doofus keeps posting that. I wonder who.
BTW a few days ago on TV there was a picture from the side that showed he had not one but two iPads on the lecturn in front of him.
Let me add that you are an idiot. Go away.

    2. I think Keynes got it a lot more right than the Austerians (who are driving Europe into recession #2), and the Chicagoans (who are the ones that drove everyone into the brick wall in the first place). You may not like his prescriptions, but it works better than the other two.

    3. “Maobama is a commie.” Really? The most left-leaning liberal extremist you can find in your government is more capitalist than the most capitalistic leader anywhere else in the world. You’re an idiot.

  2. China picks “RedPad Number One” as a winner. Not by consensus of people freely spending their hard earned money. China is just the latest country to try to tell everyone that they know what the right “thing” is for citizens to do.

Market forces ALWAYS win. Attempts by governments to force use of certain products or brands, inevitably backfires…Chevy Volt anyone?

The longer it takes the citizen/market forces to win over authoritarian governments, the worse the pain for the average citizen, who has to pay for the bad choices/fraud of government, by the citizens having less real purchasing power.

Whether a country fails due to a form of political revolution or they just spend themselves into near worthless currency (Argentina 2 times in 1900s & now Greece), market forces do win out. Modern lenders ask for 20-30% interest rates for a because the have low confidence of earnings of a deal.

Why? Governments exist only because they confiscate/tax citizens of all types and then spend even more than they tax and thus must borrow from…private citizens. Those borrowers worldwide vote with their “dollars” by withholding them when governments are not sound.

At that point is when the citizen sees interest rates rise and his purchasing power reduced, usually severely.

Ahh, but according to governments, it is never the politician’s fault. It is people not paying enough taxes, Wall Street, the Bond Market or foreign lenders.

    1. “Market forces ALWAYS win. Attempts by governments to force use of certain products or brands, inevitably backfires…Chevy Volt anyone?”

This is not neccesarily true… Market forces win when there is sufficient disclosure to be public about what it is buying. American consume more corn and related or derived products precisely because the government says so through ridiculous subsidies. But since the public doesn’t realize that half of the supermarket is just corn and we just buy what’s there. This policy has led to the deterioration of our soil, higher reliance on pesticides, and higher incidence of disease in our meat. When the government wants to move the herd it does so with little resistance. As long as the right persons of influence are making money the pertinent data is buried or marginalized, then the system just rolls on.

  3. Love the take. I always thought it funny that with all the big brains dedicated to understanding and explaining the political/economic workings of the world that it was a hippy guitar player who put the failings of communism such plain, and accurate language.

Human nature says “If I have to share, I don’t want to play”

  4. The people in China who call it communism are at the top, enjoying the wealth and power (owning things and attempting to control the populace). The vast majority of Chinese people who are forced to live within that system are at the bottom. As the middle class continues to grow, so will the dissatisfaction and pressure to change. And, if anything disrupts the ability of the agrarian majority to eke out a living, then all heck will break loose in a hurry.

  5. @Bananamoon

Those in collapsing glass houses with broken and boarding up windows, shouldn’t throw stones. If you haven’t read the news in the last 4 years, capitalism seems to not be doing that well these days. Apparently, greed is way overrated.

  6. The fact that the Chinese leaders are adopting high-price android tablets means several things:

1- They’re probably being advised by a technocrat who loves technology and doesn’t understand the utility of ease-of-use. Their willingness to defer to such authority may carry over to their other decisions … such as the building of high-speed trains.

2- They’re soon likely to download android apps that contain trojan horses and other malware … which has the potential of creating havoc within their Party.

3- Citizens fed up with China’s leadership might migrate toward the iPad as an act of (silent) rebellion. Others … vice versa.

4- This move may be a sign of thawing relations between the Chinese government and Google.

  7. If communism works then you should try living in China, North Korea, or Cuba for a while and see how life really is in those places.

The reason why capitalism isn’t working so well right now is that the government keeps doing things that prevents free markets from flushing out the crud of the economy which causes stagnation.

Jimmy Carter tried the same thing and it didn’t work.

Instead of the markets hitting bottom hard three years ago and then rebuilding the government has injected uncertainty and increased costs, created a false energy crisis, stood in the way of job creation (health care act, threat of taxes, refusing energy drilling permits) and instead chose to pursue a green fantasy where we all drive electric cars that nobody wants, living off green energy that really doesn’t work, and puts the worker instead of the owner of the business in charge (e.g. Boeing).

It’s no wonder that Obama keeps burning through his business advisors – he is trying to find one that can create an economy that works in his own fantasy world and that does not exist.
