Samsung to beat Apple to market with Retina-resolution tablet in February, says source

“Samsung is set to launch an 11.6-inch tablet running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich next year, and it will most likely be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February,” Jonathan S. Geller reports for BGR, citing “a trusted source.”

“Even though the tablet features a larger display than Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1, we’re told that the tablet is ‘barely larger’ due to the fact the slate will have a thinner bezel with a whopping 2560 x 1600 resolution, 11.6-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio,” Geller reports.

  1. “Set to launch” as in announce in February, throw a bunch of high end specs out and then either never release it or release it 5 months later?

See: Droid Bionic, Nexus PRIME, 90% of the stuff “announced” by M$, Samsung, Motorola, Asus, etc. etc. etc.

  2. Samsung is a fan of PenTile displays. If this turns out to be a PenTile display, then the true resolution will be much lower. Those type of displays fake high-resolution with a clever arrangement of the subpixels. They are nowhere near the quality of a screen that is truly high-res.

    1. They wisely do not mention OLED since it would be impossible to make truly high-resolution display with that technology for quote some time. (Even latest “hi-res” SAMOLED displays have PenTile matrix, thus having twice worse honest resolution comparing to Retina display).

  3. In other news, MS has beat Apple in delivering a tablet computer by 10 years, right-clicks by 7 years, and voice activated UI by 12 months. Apple stock down 1% on the news…

  4. Yes, Samsung, that’s it: try to beat Apple by outdoing them on technical specs. Because that’s worked so well in the past. Look at all those digital music players that out-spec’ed the iPod and how well they did. Look at the Android phones that out-spec the iPhone. Sure, Android phones out sell the iPhone collectively (freebie deals help do that), but the iPhone is the single individual best-seller.

You do that, Samsung. Spend a lot of money stuffing your tablet with specs that make the Slashdot crowd cream their jeans. Then watch as it sells just as crap as every other iPad wannabe.
