Siri now functioning on all iOS devices, no jailbreak required

“A developer who goes by the name of @Jackoplane on Twitter has recently made some publicity on his work porting Siri to the iPhone 4,” Jaden reports for iJailbreak.

“While we mentioned numerous times that developer Steven Troughton-Smith managed to get Siri semi-functioning on the iPhone 4, it looks like Jack has managed to get Siri fully functioning on the iPhone 4,” Jaden reports. “The news comes from @Gojohnnyboi (John Heaton ) who tweeted today that the Jailbreaking Community (meaning the developers of the Jailbreaking Community) have Siri fully functioning on the iPhone 4. After the news was broken by John, developer Jack posted an F.A.Q about this fully functional port of Siri over Twitter.”

Jaden reports, “If you read the F.A.Q you will realize that Siri for the iPhone 4 is expected to come to all iDevices running the iOS 5 firmware. More importantly it has been noted that this port of Siri will eventually be released to the public. For all of you wondering, you will not need to Jailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to get Siri [running] on it.”

  1. I would imagine this was Apple’s intention from the beginning. The only reasons I saw for them to not have Siri on all iOS5 devices were to… 1: boost sales of the 4s for a little while and 2: help Siri ease into the mainstream. By limiting access to just 4s’ you also help to not overwhelm the servers with every single iOS device on the planet. Gives Apple some time to work out any bugs before opening the floodgates.

    1. Uh, no. Siri is still in beta, and the 4S’s faster processor is really needed to make Siri run fast. Apple has a history of bringing out new features to the iPhone which require the latest model, and I’m sure Siri is one of those features. The last thing Apple wants is to open up Siri to older iPhones and have it run like a dog.

Keeping Siri to the 4S to help boost sales? Sure, but really only because it’s necessary. iPhones are built so well that now you really don’t need to upgrade every 2 years, unless there’s some hardware you want/need. Very different from other phones, which typically are falling apart after 2-3 years.

  2. Headline is wrong… Jailbreak is required. I was just reading through @Jackoplane’s twitter feed and 2 hours ago he posted:

“Okay, so many blogs are getting this wrong, you DO need a jailbreak for Siri. I currently don’t have a JB to get the info I need from the 4S”

  3. This headline is misleading because this is just a rumor backed by no evidence other than a developer/jailbreaker’s statement.
Mac Daily News – be more considerate/responsible, and pick an appropriate headline such as “Developer says Siri is coming to all iOS 5 devices”.

    1. When MDN posted the article, the no jailbreak requires was what was reported.
While the report has been corrected, MDN hasn’t updated the story.

      MDN will eventually…

Side note: MDN update your damn app…. Crashes in iOS 5 a lot more, half the time I can see my background and the top of 4 apps under the MDN banner on my iPhone.

And the “promise” for us to log in via the app…. 7-8 months ago you said it was coming. Is that next year?

        1. Oh nice… unless you check every few minutes you’ll never know when a new article has been posted.

Fix the app and all would be fine. But I see they take the easy way out, it’s too hard to actually fix the problem…

        2. Yeah mine works for that also…. But remember MDN already shut the app down once.
There WILL be a day when the app will not work again.

And why the hell do I want to create a twitter account just for MDN?

And fthehaters is right, the app crashed for many, it’s why people didn’t use it. Fix it and people would.

        3. Twitter is your friend…
@MacDailyNews will notify you of all posts and give you ha handy link directly to the article. Much simpler and handier than the app ever was.

Or is that “tweet stuff” just to difficult for ya? 😉

        4. So… I create a twitter account and follow MDN, and everytime a new article is posted it shows up in my notification center like the app does now?

          Wait… Twitter doesn’t do that.

        5. Mmmm… don’t know dude it does for me
You are running iOS 5 yes?
I am using Tweetbot as my twitter client, updates via the message center just fine.

As for having to create a twitter account, you do get the twitter is now integrated into the OS, ie the protocol is here to stay at least in the near term.

        6. My MDN app works perfectly. I hope they don’t take it away again. I get notifications and news from the app 1st before its on the website. Many times I get a notification on my iPhone while I’m on MDN from my iPad 2 and the news isn’t even on the website yet.
I love being able to get to MDN from a swipe on my lock screen also.
MDN please don’t give up on the iPhone App!

  4. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Siri is a service that requires significant compute resources on Apple’s side. It is in BETA. Apple is still developing it. That’s why its limited to the 4S right now.

But these assholes, who have never respected Apple to begin with, want to force it to run on all devices… and when the demand exceeds capacity, if they succeed, then Apple will be the one to blame.

This is why I consider the ‘jailbreak” community to be about as low as the android community, lawyers and used car salesman

      1. I never used bitesms myself, but I agree with your view.

After all, until iOS 5 I did as well. iOS 4 removed all but a few reasons for me to jailbreak. iOS 5 removed all but 1 reason now. Sbsettings. I can live without it though.

Notification center is maybe 80% of what I had with lockinfo etc, but it will work for me.

People need to understand that jailbreaking doesn’t mean pirating… Some do but not all.

I totally agree with you. This is an example of about 20 marked moral and personality defects that plague Apple and the world today.

    2. You make me sick. You’re confusing two entirely different issues. Jailbreaking gives the user the ability to decide which software they can install. It’s my device and it’s my decision, not Apple’s.

I don’t doubt for one second that Apple easily has the computational power to allow Siri on all devices. It wouldn’t be hard for a massive computer company (even with the second rate engineers at apple) to do it. It’s true that the older generations of devices probably lack the hardware required and on such case any user who tries to use Siri will not have much success. You cannot forget that apple is a company which exists for the sole purpose of taking your money. To defend this action as anything more than a money making scheme is none sense and the epitome of corporate influence and brainwashing.

Btw, don’t be so quick to play down android considering many of the features available for a long time on android (I.e. wifi sync and notifications bar/centre) only just came to apple devices in iOS 5. And on that note, wifi syncing was available through jailbreaking long before iOS 5, not bad for a used cars salesman.

  5. I downloaded the Siri app (3.3) via iTunes back in May,2011.
It worked on my touch3 until the 4S came out (couldn’t connect to the server), the same day the app was pulled from the iTunes store.
It’s compatible, I guess they just want more 4S sales and the servers have bogged down with just the 4S load… It would have been a disaster with everybody else trying it!

  6. Irresponsible for MDN to have posted this with factual errors. While I would love to have Siri on my 3GS, I know it’s a feature for the 4S for a reason, and I’m going to respect that. Let’s let Apple get out of Beta testing before slamming their server with way more than they can handle.

    1. Watson did not have voice recognition. In the Jeopardy segments they explained that all the questions were in text format, and “released” to Watson at the same moment the other contestants got them from Alex.

I tried Siri it in an Apple store. It didn’t transcribe all my voice instructions right, but considering the noisy environment I was sufficiently impressed.

    1. Are you fucking kidding me? This is what’s wrong with America. Cheap, dumbfucks like you who expect something for nothing! Are you really THAT stupid as to expect you’d be able to run Siri on your 1st Gen or 3G?! Asshole.

      1. Hey, FtheHaters,

        Fuck you! Hater.

Are you going to personally administer all of the hateful punishment on the boards today, or are you going to give the rest of us a chance to get some licks in?

        Dickhead hater.

    2. It’s all my fault.

How dare I own one functioning Apple product more than a couple years old?

And, while I never expected it to run Siri, it was wrong of me to momentarily believe it could after reading a headline that said it could and knowing that it is possible to install new software what is essentially a blank slate for running software.

      I’m clearly the asshole here.

  7. My take is that its entirely possible Siri will come to other devices once the code is out of beta and better optimized. As a hardware and software developer I know that getting it working is the priority and getting it optimized / lean / fast will usually follow suit.
