“Apple’s iCloud service, paired with iOS 5 and Lion, offers users a whole wealth of new sync features, access to purchased content, and geolocation fun,” Serenity Caldwell reports for Macworld.com.
“Unfortunately, as iCloud is the company’s fourth online service iteration—fifth, if you count registering for base-level Apple IDs—trying to upgrade can be confusing at best, slam-your-head-against-a-wall-in-frustration at worst,” Caldwell reports. “To help ease the pain (and keep your walls dent-free), we’ve put together some common upgrading scenarios for migrating to iCloud.”
• If you have an Apple ID that you want to use for sync and purchases: Convert it to iCloud.
• If you want to sync with one ID and purchase with another: Convert one to iCloud; use the other to log into your Store credentials.
• If you want to sync with multiple IDs: Hook up your primary account to your device; add a secondary account for calendar and contacts syncing using the Mail, Contacts & Calendars pane in System Preferences on your Mac or in the Settings app on your iOS device.

I have no idea what those suggestions mean.
I want one iTunes account and two sync accounts (mine and wife’s). I want two iPhones and one Mac to do all this.
Is that possible?? I don’t know how iCloud is going to allow two users on one Mac.
It has been a problem with MobileMe and I think it is going to be a problem with iCloud.
Create another user on the computer.
No
Then STFU. Dude gave you a very simple solution.
Prick.
Develop a custom sync profile for each of your iPhones in iTunes. The phone will only sync what it has been told to, ie certain photo albums, certain games, certain play lists. Absolutely simple. Works for the wife and I with 2 iPads, 2 iPhones and an iPod touch.
‘Works for the wife and me with 2 iPads.’
So, we have a MobileMe account. I have an iPhone 4s, she has a 3G, we share a Leopard MacBook. If I move MobileMe to iCloud, what happens to mail and calendar on iPhone 3G and MacBook?
Sorry. Too scary.
What the heck? I just went ahead and created a brand new me.com account just for iCloud. Simplest process in the world. None of that convoluted sh*t for me. The iTunes account stayed where it was – for purchasing content in the App Store. Nothing difficult at all.
For many, many years I had an Apple ID that was my name. My eWorld.com, them Mac.com, then me.com address was my name @ whatever they called their email service. When I converted my ID name to my ID email username for iCloud the problems began. I have two semi linked usernames to one convoluted system.
I can’t verify my new username because the email address is linked to the old user name. It is hit or miss when I login. In some instances I’m clear, in others I get rejected.
I suspect it will be resolved soon, I hope
huh?? On a side note, mobile me has been broken for a few days now. Anyone else having issues?
You can try using http://www.icloud.com to access your MobilMe account. When I converted to iCloud all of my online login moved to the icoud.com address.
Apple Mail.app on my Mac asked for my password a few times when I tried to send an email from my MobileMe account. (I’ve not yet made the migration to iCloud).
I checked my smtp settings an it turned out that they were still set for mail.mac.com. I changed that mail.me.com and it worked again.
Same with the outgoing server.
MobileMe services are meant to stay up in parallel to iCloud for another few months.
It really isn’t that complicated. I’m using one Apple ID and created two me.com accounts – one for myself and one for my wife. Decoupling what she does on her iMac and her iPad from my MacBook Air and my iPad took a little digging in to the System Preferences on the Mac and Settings on the iPad but hardly anything that had me banging my head against the wall.
One just needs to be patient and go slow when setting this stuff up. I think problems occur when people are impatient to be up and running and start doing things without really know what’s happening.
I got caught out by this. I have a cox.net account which I usd for iTunes purchases. But I also have a me.com account. When I went to move my MobileMe account to iCloud it took the me.com email as the primary email account. I then set up my iPhone 4 and my iMac using that email and I thought all was well.
But then I tried to pull down purchased music from iCloud on to my iPhone and it told me that’s have no purchased music on that account. I ended up syncing music normally. But the benefits of iCloud aren’t working for me. To compound my mistake I purchased additional iCloud storage before realizing the issue.
I’ll have to talk with Apple support to figure out how to fix this mess.
I had the same problem. What worked for me was changing my App Store ID to the one that is linked to my iTunes account but leaving my iCloud ID as is. On your iPhone you can go to Settings>Store and it allows you to set a different ID from you iCloud email (just tap on the Apple ID at the bottom of the screen to change it). You should be able to enter your cox.net ID there. It does give you a warning that you can’t change it back for 90 days or something. Don’t know how the whole iCloud storage thing will work out though.
ATT…. how about activation that… ohhhh…. I don’t know…. WORKS?
Snow Leopard here so NO iCloud for me. I can use it on my windows box though….thanks Apple.
It just works fine for me on my old G4 Quicksilver PPC with Leopard, iPhone and 2 iPod touches.
