Underperformance primes Apple stock for ‘Let’s Talk iPhone’ unveilings

“Apple (AAPL) is hosting a press conference at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, tomorrow morning, and it’s expected the subject will be the unveiling of a new model of the iPhone,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s. “A couple of folks on the Street this morning have weighed in with the view that the stock has been underperforming its historical ramp into iPhone announcements, and that there could be upside after the meeting, as a result.”

Ray reports, “William Power with R.W. Baird this morning reiterates an Outperform rating on Apple shares and a $485 price target, writing that Apple’s new model, whatever it is, will ‘continue to set the standard’ for smartphones… Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities expects long, long lines after pent-up demand for the iPhone, given there was no summer introduction. He thinks the thing may sell more than the 1.7 million units of the iPhone 4 that happened in the first three days it was on sale. White, who refers to the new model as the ‘iPhone 5,’ is going with the rumors of a ‘sleek, new look’ using an aluminum casing. He makes note of the prospect there will be an upgraded model similar to the 4, called the ‘iPhone 4S.'”

  1. You think these idiots could learn to read the tea leaves soon.

The event is in a smaller controlled location. Why? This demo needs to correctly work off the internet. Remember when Steve Jobs had to tell everyone to turn off their 600 plus WiFi hot spots? The reason for the location change is to guarantee that there isn’t a repeat of that problem. The event is more about “Lets talk” not just the new iPhone.

    1. So, what will a Apple’s stock be worth when all the OS X and iOS devices can work as a voice activated personal assistant? How small can an iOS device get when no screen is required to work with it or as the central device in your car? Is there a new market that Apple is about to create or recreate and dominate?

    Anybody remember antenna-gate?

An aluminum housing aint gonna work. How is the radio signal going to get out or get in?

    1. Wow, you are right. I guess I better stop using that iPad 3G that doesn’t work. Thanks for the heads up. I feel like such a sucker that I bought this when clearly you cannot get a radio signal through aluminum.

    2. I may be wrong, but I’ll reckon the antenna signal could pass through the glass.
      Unless Apple’s using transparent aluminum.
      “Computer. …
      Computer. …
      Hellooo, computer.”

  3. I think it’s at Cupertino because Adobe has already rented the space in S.F.. They had no problems with WiFi during the last 2 events. AAPL is sitting at 377 now. I don’t see it ramping up 75 points immediately after the announcement. AAPL has a history of dropping after almost every product announcement. It Will go up hopefully before the quarterly earnings call October 18. But it has a history of dropping just before or immediately after earnings. It’s down now so it may rise before tomorrow but it’s pretty scary right now. hope everyone has long In the money calls.
