Apple’s iOS 5, iPhone 5 key, but iCloud much more important to Apple

“Apple’s plans to launch its latest iPhone will be closely watched for its specs, new features and ability to get consumers to line up for the device, but iCloud’s rollout will be far more strategic,” Larry Dignan reports for ZDNet. “If you were to rank Apple’s launches in order they’d be iCloud, iOS 5 and then the iPhone 5.”

“In other words, don’t get confused by the shiny objects,” Dignan reports. “As iCloud’s launch goes so does Apple’s transition from a PC-centric vendor to one more equipped for the decades to come. If iCloud has iOutages and other issues it will be a black mark on Apple.”

  1. Who wrote that? Trying to bring attention to iCloud.

Yeah, it is going to hit some snags. I do not see it playing out smoothly. They still haven’t told me how I’m going to have multiple email addresses with one iTunes account :/

Anyway. Yes, it will receive some black marks, but it isn’t going to mean doom for Apple.

Now… back to the shiny objects please

    1. The 4DFool must be new to Apple products. If they have an iPhone already, it is still likely shiny and works great. Apple is about the combination of hardware and software to combine to give a great and unique user experience. This article nails it . . . it is the software and services that will make it great.

      1. … AND the iPad! And, I’m not positive, but I think the iPad without the iDisk is going to pose some problems. Like … how do I move files between my iPad and my “computer”? Last Saturday I did this for my wife, headed to NYC to do a playwright thing, and needed iDisk to get it TO the iPad, iWork to get it OFF the iPad. It worked just fine, while there.

    2. AGREED with 4Dfool
Shiny Objects earn Money far more then iTunes earns.

This iCLOUD offers mostly is free services – an incentive to us USERS – a good reason to buy APPLE a great way to differentiate why APPLE is different.

I feel there will big HUGE snags. Sorry – I really do.
imagine having 4 of your own devices always downloading and syncing automatically. What a massive task. Imagine then all the world sycing always – updates flying all the time. Hurray – down with ease – but again – do we want all our devices synced exactly the same – hope theres a way to turn it off.

Oh please – APPLE is wonderful but MobileME is so bad at the moment – there is no way bib tomorrow all is fixed. At my end, this Apple email transition is extremely garbage ever since iCloud was mentioned. Service – BS – the service is already suffering. If any of this really was true – the switch goes on tomorrow – we shall see.

      1. The thing is, tomorrow, my known Apple experience ceases. MobileMe never quite got anything right, especially multiple users on one account. My Time Capsule does some annoying things with simple backups of iCal… add in iCloud…. noway they have that figured out.

My best bet? I’m seriously thinking of ditching the old MacBook and original iPhone. Then start fresh. This iCloud business might be great, but I think this average user needs an overhaul tomorrow if I have even the slightest chance to “get” iCloud. For me, it is like I’m being forced over the edge with this one. I’m okay with that. It is time. But make no mistake anyone, it is the hardware that fancies my attention. It just so happens that to make the best hardware, they need to make outstanding software…. iOS 5.

      2. The hardware is useless without software. If the software is non-existent or of poor quality, no one will buy it. (see Zune, Playbook, etc.)

There are many out there who are dazzled by shiny things and specs but in the end, Apple has proven that is is software that makes the difference.

  2. articles telling us WHAT will happen on OCT 4th
well – here is my predictions

1 – iPhone 5 will be shown and iOS 5 will showcasing it
2 – the dates that iPhone5 is available and where – china will be 1st along with NorthAmerica – qualities will be somewhat limited – focus on China to earn the biggest sales gain and market share – Possible iPhone4s – merely a revision to 4 allowing the open sim policy again Asia is wishes for

3 – Voice control will be focused and demos in action

4 – iCloud integration explained and demos in action

5 – Updates on iTouch (possible kit to make it have phone features – more memory storage or the 4s is the new iTouch) also iTV shown and showcased in conjunction to iCloud

6 – more iCloud stuff – possible demo with iPhone 4 and iPad showing iCloud features again across the new iOS 5

7 – there will not be the classic Steve Jobs, “and one last thing.”

YES iCLOUD IS BIG — but the real FOCUS kid you not is iOS 5
something so seamless like iCloud will not RUN APPLE it it is a free service – its an incentive to all iOS5 users – it WILL MAKE things clear, why using APPLE devices is DIFFERENT. But the silver lining key here – as always – remains to be iOS 5.

  3. Only benefit I’m looking forward to with what’s known is the song matching. My iTunes use has waned considerably over the last year–really have no use for it between what I’m doing with Spotify, AudioGalaxy and PogoPlug–I GOT CLOUDAGE–just hoping Apple will give me one big cloud in the same airspace.

    1. It sounds really great – and I hope it works for you. But the other services you speak about – stream no?

Match from APPLE is an incentive – for sure a great value… proof of purchase is required on this old cps for example and APPLE will match it to your other purchases as a collection on the iTunes service for DOWNLOADING. It is not streamed from the Cloud but downloaded as always.

IF I AM WRONG – my apologize in advance.

  4. Waterfalls

I wish I could follow your sentences, You seem so enthusiastic but i’m still not sure where you are coming from. I think I know where you are going. Anyway, it’s probably my fault.

  5. Wow just read that Sprint spending 30 billion for exclusive iPhone 5. There goes AAPL stock down more I would guess. Sprint has crummy coverage where we live so guess we are stuck with our iPhone 4 models for what looks like 4 years. Not sure a bigger camera and a bit faster chip is worth a new two year contract with AT&T. Damn I am mad at this.

  6. iCloud, like the “world without walls” crap that MS has been attempting to push for several years now, is simply not a future that we want anything to do with. Nobody, not even Apple, will not entice us into a rent-a-computer service. We are happy to create, store, and serve our own content on our own hardware. We would be highly disappointed if Apple lost focus on its hardware and software — items within its control — in an attempt to offer a new generation server-terminal computing experience, which of course relies on communications networks that are neither up to the task nor under the control of Apple or the end user. It’s a perfect example of taking a pure computing experience and outsourcing it through a bunch of middle-men who don’t have your best interest in mind. We would be disappointed to see Apple stake its future on the promise of the “cloud”. Clouds suck.
