Amazon has alerted select media to an invitation-only special event to be held in New York city on Wednesday, September 28th, according to AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski.

Affordable Color E-Ink! Now THAT would be cool. As much as I love my iPad… I won’t read a novel on it. A magazine, yes. A periodical, definitely. A novel… ugh! Only if I have to.
Never understood why people would choose a kindle over an iPad for reading books.
Can’t stand looking at a palm pilot screen, oops.. Kindle.
As a person who owns both an iPad and a Kindle, I can say that for reading books, the Kindle is far superior. A backlit screen is just not ideal for long reading sessions. I’ve tried many different brightness settings, and the Kindle still wins.
Now magazines (or any content that has lots of pictures or illustrations) absolutely suck on the Kindle, so I much prefer using Zinio on the iPad for magazines, and the Kindle app for any books that do have lots of photos.
You’re reading it wrong.
Agreed. I also own both devices for that very reason – the Kindle is better for simply reading.
see, My uncle has a kindle. I’ve read book on both, I can’t stand the kindle..
To each their own I guess.
Maybe it’s cause when I do read on the iPad, it’s maybe an hour before I am doing something else.. So maybe we have two different meanings to “long” reading sessions.
also when I do read, it’s NOT during the daylight hours.. Thats when I work.
I read at 10pm-1am or so, and mostly outside with only the iPad’s light. During the daytime I am working and can’t even get to my iPad.. (can’t bring it to work sadly)
I’m with you. I have both generations of the iPad and love them. But I agree with you on the Kindle for reading for any long period (which is what you do when you read a book). Not being a fanboy I’m not sure why fanboys can’t acknowledge when another company does something as well or even better (though not often) than AAPL. As a long time ( more than 25 years) Apple user and devotee I love my Apple stuff but I do get a lot of amusement reading fanboy rants. They are seldom based on logic. But we are dealing with losers so I guess it’s to be expected.
Whether the Kindle screen is better for reading books or not, the fact remains that it can’t do anything else. This may not be a problem for those who can afford both a Kindle and an iPad, but most people choose one or the other. Different strokes for different folks.
But it’s about reading not how many other things it will do. And it’s a fraction of the cost of a iPad.
Actually for most of the book (99%?) color is useless. Just cut the current Kindle’s price to 99 bucks and speed up the processor, and maybe a touch screen. That’s all you need.
The kIndle tablet stuff is cool, but not for real readers.
i see A LOT of kindles in the NYC subway. seeing more ipads now but a lot more kindles. if i didn’t have an ipad and wanted something bigger than a phone to read on i’d buy the kindle for $115.
MDN’s take. We already have a 7″ color android based e reader, the nook. This will be amazons version, still a failure.
I think that this will be far more successful than the Nook, at least for as long as Amazon is allowed to sell it.
They have basically created their own Android fork, and from the initial reports I’m hearing have done a great job really integrating everything into the Amazon ecosystem (Kindle, Amazon Music, Unbox, etc.). Word is the entire interface is done well.
I guess we’ll see. Will it be a true iPad competitor? No. But I think it will be the only tablet that isn’t an iPad to sell in any real numbers.
Of course, once Android is destroyed, then Amazon will have to do something else.
It makes perfect sense that people who just want to read books would prefer the Kindle because it’s cheaper and lighter. But only reading books on a portable tablet is like only driving your car to the corner drugstore.
Where do you live – NYC? Ever realize that it would be perfectly normal to drive a car to the corner drugstore in the remainder of United States?
Actually, if the drugstore is really right down on the corner, it SHOULDN’T be perfectly normal to drive there no matter where you live in the US, but sadly, many people don’t think that they should walk anywhere anymore.
good point.
It’s sad to see how many people will refuse to walk, any distance…
I live 5 blocks from a movie theater. I walk to go watch a movie, why drive?
People always look at me like i’m crazy for walking to meet them there… and I refuse the “lift” home so I must be nuts..
You missed the point. Would you buy a car that was only capable of going as far as the corner drugstore? No, of course not. To me, buying a mobile tablet that only displays books is just as silly.
“It makes perfect sense that people who just want to read books …” yep and their drawers are full of lychee peelers, pineapple corers, sock extenders, egg poachers and all the other bits of cheap single purpose clutter crap that crowd out people’s hovels. Yep makes perfect sense.
Funny, but my home was being crowded by physical books prior to buying a Kindle (I bought the original Kindle at launch). I read about a book per week on average, so just not having all of those books (and instant access to new books) was great.
I donated almost all of my physical books and was able to get rid of the many bookshelves we had.
So, while the Kindle *is* a single use device, it still serves a very important purpose for those of us who read often, and the reading experience on the “real” Kindle is much better than on the iPad. If this new Amazon tablet is backlit (and I’m sure it likely will be), then I don’t get why anyone would choose it over an iPad (other than price alone).
Why does amazon even try or have a special event to announce a mediocre device? Their trying to be like Apple when they do their media announcement. The difference is that Apple is far more exciting and have cool stuff. Amazon is booooooooring. Color Kindle. Whoooooopeeeeeee Dooooooooo, yeah whatever Amazon. lol
