“Samsung Electronics Co. is preparing to expand its tablet-computer lineup by using a new version of Microsoft Corp.’s Windows software as the South Korean company’s products built around Google Inc.’s Android operating system come under legal attack from Apple Inc.,” Evan Ramstad reports for The Wall Street Journal.
“The move is expected to be announced at a Microsoft developers conference in California next week, people familiar with Samsung’s plans said,” Ramstad reports. “The news came ahead of a decision expected Friday from a German court on whether to leave in place an order barring sales of Samsung’s Android-based tablets, pending trial next year of a patent case between Samsung and Apple.”

Ramstad reports, “‘Samsung at least has to have a double bet rather than relying 100% on Android,’ said Chang Sea-jin, a business professor at National University of Singapore and author of a book on Samsung. ‘That will give them a bargaining position with Google and expose them to a broader group of customers.'”

MacDailyNews Take: GIGO.
I was under the impression that Apple’s main beef with Samsung was hardware, not software.
It is, but as Android comes under separate threats, Samsung wants to be able to run an OS. So far, Microsoft is in safety from patent violations. Also, what is GIGO? Don’t understand that.
Garbage In, Garbage Out
Google in, garbage out.
Garbage in, Google out
Haha, this is what happens when everyone jumps on the “open source” train and your main OS pusher goes and buys one of your hardware competitor. You get shafted and start to look for an exit/diversification. Wake the fuck up and smell the coffee HTC, Samsung did…
Funny just as they dump it WebOS just might have had an outside chance of broadening its horizons.
Re: MDN take, ’nuff said!
Hold tight people, is this the next “iPad killer ” loool I think NOT !!’
GIGO: Garbage in, garbage out. Put MSFT in anything, compost comes out.
Actually, compost is useful. MSFT in something creates instant oxymorons.
More like morons starved of oxygen.
Or should that be moronic oxygen thieves?
Wouldn’t that make them dead?
Microsoft and Google will need to remove the stolen code in Android and not use Oracles Java – nevertheless – there might still be more code that is taken from Apples iOS.
WIthout Android all the NEW and OLD devices will be DEAD machines.
What happened to Microsofts Win9 – for its phone and Nokia – what the Tablet won’t run Win9 – CUSTOMERS will be PISSED!
Android does rip off quite a lot of Java code. As far as I know there is no actually iOS code in Android. The problem with Android in regards to iOS is the look and feel and the reproduction of patented Apple functions in the OS.
…”Samsung moves to expand ligation business…”
Microsoft is reportedly demanding that Samsung pay $15 for each smartphone handset it makes based on Android.
TELL ME NOW — how is this possible?
What is in ANDROID that Microsoft OWNS and wishes a licensing fee.
SHOULD it not be GOOGLE whom demands this FEE.
AND i thought ANDROID was to be with out a FEE… free NO?

It’s part of MS’s attack on Linux. They claim Linux infringes MS IP. Android is a lInux derivative, therefore (to MS) Android must also infringe.
Google’s fee is there, it’s just hidden.
Apple is Microsoft’s best ally
No Andriod does infringe on IOS’s main system API. http://macdailynews.com/2011/09/06/apple-to-itc-googles-android-infringes-on-our-api-patent/
Samdung lays a zune! 🙂
In reaching for the stars, Samsung hitches their wagon to a rock. Unfortunately, the only OSs available to them are rocks.
Apple, the only hardware manufacturer to seriously continue investing in using an “in-house” OS over the years, comes out the true winner in the end.
Now, Apple’s hardware competitors want to do it too, but the hurdle to get to where Apple is now is too tall, so they rely on Google or Microsoft for software. Apple did it incrementally over the years (decades actually); Apple did not need to do everything in one giant milestone.
AND now, Apple’s software competitors want to get into hardware. There will be some hurdles there as well.
Well said.
Yes, excellent points. Apple stuck to its philosophy of vertical integration of *elegant* hardware with *elegant* software, despite enduring decades of scathing criticism from tech columnists and wall street pundits: “Apple should transition away from Mac OS and adopt Windows to survive” “Apple should abandon OS X and use Windows XP” “Apple should give up their crazy retail store idea” “Apple should make iPods and iTunes compatible with Windows Media Player” “Apple does not understand the phone industry” “Apple should license OS X to Dell and HP” …Apple stuck to their guns… Nowww, all the pundits urge the tech behemoths to adopt Vertical Integration! Vertical Integration!
All credit goes to Steve and Team! Awesome job Team!
They are both crappy scumbag companies.
“Samsung Electronics Co. is preparing to expand its tablet-computer lineup by using a new version of Microsoft Corp.’s Windows software”
Windows + tablet = dead on arrival.
Ironically it’ll fail the hardest in South Korea, where even Macs seem to have a larger presence than newer versions of Windows as XP is held on to with a deathgrip.
Stupid, stupid Samsung. What a great show of confidence this is towards Bada, too.
What’s the matter with you people?
Can’t you spell simple stuff?
The name is Samesong.
NOT Samsung..
Eeesh!
+1
Going from Android to Windows…out of the frying pan into the fire. If Samsung were not worried, then it wouldn’t be spending the resources to “diversify” into Windows-based mobile devices. No company with a brain hooks up with Microsoft unless the management is truly desperate. There is a long trail of desiccated Microsoft “partners” that were embraced and extinguished over the past couple of decades.
This move is a strong sign that Apple is winning. Samsung is throwing out as much legal garbage as possible to delay the progress of Apple’s lawsuits so that it can get this new contingency plan in gear. Might as well start pricing puts on Samsung.
Android and Windows are the platform cradles for trojans horses to hibernate and defeat the host country. Samsung and HTC are killing off HP, Dell, Motorola in the PC and smartphone businesses.
I believe Samsung at one point used to make PlayForSure-compatible MP3 players, and then came Zune.
It is telling, when Samsung now decides, after having been Zuned once already, to hedge their bets by going back to Microsoft. They must be really, really scared of Apple legal (and the damage it can do to Android).
