Apple’s MacBook Air draws huge crowds, sells out in Hong Kong ahead of China debut

“Apple’s newly updated MacBook Air lineup debuted this week in Hong Kong, attracting crowds and selling out quickly, ahead of making an anticipated splash in mainland China,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

“The newly updated MacBook Air is ‘ready to take flight in China,’ analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities said in a note to investors on Friday,” Hughes reports. “Over the last week, the new thin-and-light notebook went on sale at Hong Kong-based resellers, and was met with long lines and stock-outs.”

Hughes reports, “Interest surrounding the debut of new MacBook Air models may also have generated increased interest in other products like the iPhone 4 and iPad 2. This past week, stores in Hong Kong were said to be sold out of the iPhone 4, while certain iPad 2 models were also unavailable.”

  1. Man, I’ve been looking at those 11″ MBA in the Apple store lately and they look tiny…how do you get real work done on those? I don’t think I can live with anything less than 15″ which is what I rock right now. I bought the 13″ MBP as a starter kit but exchanged that for a 15″ after two weeks. I’m waiting for the 17″ to get downsized to MBA proportions and I might rock that as my next Mac. I do like the 27″ iMac though. For me, the bigger the better.

And what about the RAM and SSD not being user upgradeable. I hate that. I hope they don’t make the 15″/17″ locked down too tightly for the next refresh or I’ll be totally disappointed.

    1. I feel the same way about the 11″ model. The screen is so tiny that my 50 year old eyes, even with my prescription computer glasses, would make it hard to read anything on the screen.

And yes, I’ve changed the resolution in the Apple store to something more viewable for my crappy eyesight. Doing this only makes all the type fuzzy and that bothers me more.

However, I’m probably not the target buyer for this product… Apple is appealing to a much younger buyer who wants a light, durable, sub $1000 laptop and they’ve hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

I did have a 13 inch Air for 2+ years and loved it for web surfing, book writing, and email. It was not my main computer though, but a machine I used occasionally at home/office and what I took with me when I was on the road. MB Airs are really not designed to be a one’s sole computer if the user has any serious design or video editing to do.

… and I completely concur with your dislike of the fact that the RAM is not upgradeable. But the SSD plugs right in and there are larger capacity aftermarket units coming out if I’m not mistaken (and I might be).

    2. Bln – it’s a use case issue, mostly.

If it’ll be your primary computer, go for the size and performance you require.

If it’s a secondary unit that still needs to perform, and you’ll be toting it around a lot, go for as small a size as you can but max out the other specs (RAM, SSD etc.)

For me the primary unit is the iMac at home (mothership), while the 11″ MBAir is one I carry everyday and travel with. It goes with the iPad, iPhone and Nikon I often carry together — with all those electronics, size and portability are huge.

  3. the MBA totally meets my modest laptop needs. I knew a new generation would be out but still got the prior months before the current one launched.

the SSD just makes the real world use so much better.

Even my older Mac Mini G4’s have new life with the SSD’s

FYI – most of my computers for work are sales terminals running Excel spreadsheets/email/browsing/filemaker database

  4. But I heard some Wintards saying that the store only had a dozen MacBook Airs in stock and that’s why they sold out. They said the only reason there was a crowd because Apple was giving out free egg rolls to anyone that stood on line. It was, as usual, a ruse to fool the media into thinking that average Chinese consumers are actually buying Apple products when in reality only one Chinese consumer out of a hundred thousand can afford a genuine Apple product.

      1. Sorry, but that does not work, doubting Wintards. 1 out of 100,000 is 10 out of a million and 10,000 out of a billion. Even with the total population of China closing on 1.4B, that ratio only comes out to 14,000 Apple products.

Since the fake Apple stoers in China have likely sold a lot more than 14,000 devices, both the fabricated Wintard statistic and the premise that it was intended to support are in error.

    1. Hong Kong citizens don’t necessarily consider them selves part of China. And many HK residents can certainly affor Apple products

Ever been to HK? If not, shut up about things you have no idea of.

  5. “If we could have made more, we would have sold more.” So, how big will Apple be, what will the quarter’s sale be? Next quarter’s sales?

Answer: How many can they get made? That is how many they will sell. Inventory near ZERO … Shelves sucked dry. Old story, new story, next years story too! At least people stopped buying the other low cost crap. That will free up the manufacturing for the products and devices people want. You know, the ones with the Apple logo on them.

  6. I got mine in Apple HK’s online store had the 13″ for myself and the 11″ for my wife. Had them for over a month now. My previous workhorse was a MBP 17″. This new 13″ Air blew it away. It’s simply the most responsive computer I’ve ever used. I was worried about the screen size, but Mission Control made it quite useable and I got used to it on the first day, especially on the road. Still waiting for my 27″ display port cinema display to use in the office though… Won’t ship until late Sept, sigh.
