RUMOR: Photo of iPhone 5 screen with elongated gesture-based home button leaked

“Today, we came across a picture that’s probably showing workers of Wintek checking the touchscreens of the next iPhone,” Chris Chang reports for M.I.C. Gadget.

“This pic is posted by a Sina Microblog (China’s Twitter-style service) users,” Chang reports. “The workers are wearing protective uniforms and masks. They seemed to be checking (or cleaning) the touchscreen component of iPhone.”

Chang reports, “Looking deeper at the entire row of touchscreens , we see something different — the home button. According to 9to5Mac, it’s an elongated gesture home button. Lastly, the size of the screen looks bigger than our iPhone 4 screen. So, this leads to us a new question, are we looking at the touchscreens of the next iPhone?”

  1. It looks like we are seeing the inside of the screen not the outside, so that longer piece is probably just a mount for the button.

I dont think you could implement a gestures based home button without it being way bigger than what we’re seeing there anyway.

  2. A person in US looking at this photo would say I wish those were American workers. A few years from now when the iPhone 9 or 10 is due out the photo will show robots doing the work and people would then be saying, I wish those were human workers. By that point leaked photos may be a thing of the past.

    1. bjr001, I think you are absolutely right.

In 10 years we have gone from single purpose robots to partially programmable to 6 axis small easily programmable robots that have remarkable agility.

Plus, the likes of the small KUKA 6 axis robots are less than $100k last time I checked. For $100k you get a tireless worker that can run 24 hours a day for years.

When you start doing 50 million a year of something, robots have to be in your plan.

  3. The suggestion that anyone, even Superman, could look and these photos and conclude that “the size of the screen looks bigger than our iPhone 4 screen” is absolutely ludicrous.

Equally absurd is the suggestion that anyone with fingers larger than a two-year-old child’s could perform gestures on a Home button smaller than a postage stamp.

  4. Maybe the gesture based home button would be for swiping between apps, like you do in Lion. Just a simple swipe left or right, which is why the button is the same height, just wider.

  5. It’s unusual for Apple to be holding an iPhone event in September. But even if it were to, I am guessing it will have two separate events for the iPhone and iPod. Cloud music is now a big segment in itself and Apple will not want to shadow their announcements here with the launch of an iPhone.

  6. You people are totally grasping at straws when it comes to advance info for the iPhone 5. Those parts could be for any past or future smartphone from any company in the world. Why does it even matter? They’re just parts.

    1. Thank you Laughing Boy48. I guess it’s late enough for the fanboys to finally roll out of bed. Mom made em pancakes so now they’re ready to post! Just gotta wonder if any of them have even a part time job at the local game store? Pussies.

  7. I wonder how long those workers are in that garb? Go put on some medical latex gloves and wear them for a few hours and take them off and see if your hands gets as sweaty as mine. I can’t imagine wearimg them for 8 hours! Plus to be dressed from head to toe in that techno burka to boot! I hope they have more than that little fan… Crank up the a/c please!
