Nine things you should do after installing Mac OS X Lion

“Looking to make your Lion experience that much better, we’ve bundled together a bevy of tips and tricks that you really ought to have ready on your first trip into the new OS,” Greg Kumparak reports for TechCrunch. “Now, something to keep in mind: these tips aren’t one-size-fits-all. Read through the list and pick out the ones that sound good, and be sure to drop a comment if you’ve got a tip of your own.”

Nine things you should do after installing Mac OS X Lion:

• Leave It Alone For A Few Hours
• Check Out PDF Signing In Preview
• Reverse Mouse/Touchpad Scrolling

MacDailyNews Take: Suck it up. Give yourself some time to get used to something new. After a week with it, you might find you like it. You might also find yourself ready for whatever Apple has next. Apple rarely makes such changes without a plan – much of which is yet to be revealed. If, after a week or so, you find you just can’t adapt, then go back to the old way. But, to give up immediately is bad advice.

In OS X Lion, imagine a long sheet of paper; pull it down to see the top, push it up to see the bottom.

• Re-enable Dot Indicators Under Running Apps
• Launch Software update
• Disable Dashboard In Mission Control
• Give Filevault Another Chance
• Learn the new multi-touch gestures

MacDailyNews Take: Exactly our point above and contradictory to Kumparak’s advice to not learn OS X Lion’s default scrolling behavior.

• Disable Autocorrect

MacDailyNews Take: If you use OS X Lion on your desktop Mac, we recommend you take a serious look at Apple’s $69 Magic Trackpad. We use them with our Mac desktops and OS X Lion just isn’t the same without them.

    1. the fact that it’s backwards from every other computer in the world.

Sit down and play any FPS game, get comfortable with it.
now invert the mouse every hour.

Thats what you have to go through if you ever touch ANY computer that is not yours.. “Backwards” one minute, “correct” the next.
For me, in a typical week… I use my Mac, and about 30 other computers. NONE of which i can change the scrolling to be inverted.

On a touchscreen, it IS correct to be the “Natural” way. but the trackpad/mouse are NOT on the screen.

move your cursor down your screen, now scroll UP… to move down the page..

      I’m just glad it’s an option….

  1. I’m late to this discussion, but having used Lion for just a few days, I’m a total convert to natural scrolling. It is actually more intuitive, especially if you work in documents a lot as I do.

I notice one or two people are saying it doesn’t work for games, and maybe game interfaces, being more “unnatural” paradigms in the first place (I don’t know I don’t play any except on the Wii) don’t work as well with Natual scrolling.

I for one though, am a convert.

  2. Well, I too don’t have a trackpad so the option to disable it is not there, as pointed out by flakes.
Plus the mouse option “move content” is not there either.

Its natural for me to scroll the way I’ve been scrolling for 25 years.

I’m on an imac 24 inch.

I want choice. I use PCs and Macs.

    1. I found this on my mom’s mini last night. She doesn’t have the trackpad either.

BUT the option IS there. (i was preparing for my mother’s wrath if i couldn’t fix it)

Go to the mouse system preference pane, first checkbox. uncheck it, and scrolling is back to the old way.
