6 things you don’t know Mac OS X Lion can do

“Lion is finally here. Yay! There are more than 250 new features, but most of the media noise is devoted to the biggies like Launchpad, Mission Control, Auto Save, and Versions,” Robin Parrish writes for AppleGazette.

Here are 6 goodies you may not have discovered yet:

1. Spotlight Can Search More Than Your Computer
2. Smart Zoom
3. iPhoto Faces
4. iCal Day View
5. iTunes Library Screen Saver

    1. Check the article. It is NOT what you think. It is the ability to access iPhoto Faces from the Address Book and assign a face picture to a contact. That didn’t exist prior to Lion.

    1. Having Spotlight able to “Search More Than Your Computer” sounds like it was copied from VISTA – – I have this at work and I hate this ‘feature’: dammit, I know *where* I want to search, and if I wanted to search the Internet, I’d NOT be using the little text search box at the bottom of the Start menu.

This #)((*$#)(*# “feature” has cost me too many ‘double searches’ when the “See, I’m being helpful!” did not search my local HDD, but pulled up a webpage.

      – – –

In the meantime, I still consider Spotlight’s performance to be utterly underwhelming (at least through Leopard), particularly how it hasn’t had adequate preference settings (eg, having the default search be by filename, not keyword)

Until I hear otherwise, I’m going to have to suspect that this is simply non-value-added BLOATWARE.

      -hh

        1. It’s an Apple developed search originally used in the iTunes store that was adopted for the desktop. A reverse Http look-up algorithm that includes meta-data.

  1. “About This Mac” is way better too in Lion (on my 2009 iMac). And is it just me not noticing (or remembering) but can you now resize the window from any side now? Something Windows could do but the Mac couldn’t, ’til now? NEAT!

I must say Lion is a more significant upgrade than Snow Leopard was, much as I appreciated it and still use it on my 2007 Mac Pro, for now. Lion eventually will get installed once I get past my current graphics intensive project. No hurry. I do look forward to it, and Apple’s Trackpad is a lot more useful in Lion.

    1. i do love the new about this mac page also.

yeah SJ mentioned the resize from anywhere function.
      also a great new feature…

I really do like Lion, only a few quirks need to be fixed.
Those fence sitters really should just go grab a copy, if you have more than one mac you really should. Put it on one and you will put it on the rest soon.

My 2011 27″ iMac still runs SL, but that will change probably tomorrow. Too much crap to do today…
