“Apple Inc., maker of the iPad tablet computer and the iPhone, was sued by New York publisher John T. Colby in federal court today for trademark infringement over its use of the term ‘iBooks,'” Chris Dolmetsch reports for Bloomberg.
“Colby bought in 2006 and 2007 the assets of various entities owned by New York publisher Byron Preiss, who had published more than 1,000 hardcover and paperback books under the ‘ibooks’ name starting in September 1999,” Dolmetsch reports.
“Apple has a trademark on the name ‘IBOOK’ for computers and once sold a personal computer known as the ‘iBook,’ according to the lawsuit,” Dolmetsch reports. “The Cupertino, California-based company never used the term as a designation for electronic books or an application for the delivery of electronic books until it began selling the iPad in April 2010, Colby said in the lawsuit.”

But moving forward, how about just concentrating on the Apple brand. By that reckoning Apple should abandon the name “Apple” as it’s a relic of the ’80s when computer companies were named after fruit. Just like Microsoft is a relic of the era when every software company had “soft” in the name.
Apple is the name of the company (partly) which happens to have an incredible brand value associated with it. The ‘i’ is a separate sub-brand (with its own value and history). It isn’t as easy, nor necessary for the company to change/get rid of its name than a sub-brand.
What I am suggesting here, a brand within a brand maybe redundant if not distracting. They also attract, apparently, more trademark infringement lawsuits. Sony Discman, Sony TV weren’t named sDiscman or sTV. They relied on the brand Sony (which was quite powerful in its day), and many were sold on just that.
You may argue, Nike tried with the Air Max brand, but in general they were still called Nike Airs than Air Maxs. Unlike how we say, iPods than Apple pods. This allows companies and trolls to trademark many words preceded by an ‘i’ (iRiver etc.) that aren’t owned by Apple.
Yet, expectations are now intuited before announced that some Apple TV should be iTV, or Apple’s phone would be iPhone, Cloud to be iCloud etc. Apple is paying for a brand value on the letter ‘i’ where it doesn’t own (can’t trademark) a letter.
Apple’s name or their wonderfully iconic symbol , OTOH, is theirs to play with. Why attract so many lawsuits, and childish iFascinations, when you can have Clouds and Futures. It’s unique, it’s Apple, and everyone gets that.
