Dell passes on U.S., Europe; to launch 10-inch Android tablet in China

“Dell Inc has chosen to launch its new 10-inch Android tablet in China this summer, passing up on a U.S., Europe launch, as China emerges as a front line battle for tablets,” Melanie Lee reports for Reuters.

“The tablet named ‘Streak 10 Pro’ will target Chinese ‘prosumers,’ a term used to describe advanced-level consumers, Amit Midha, Dell’s President of Greater China and South Asia, said on a corporate blog on Thursday,” Lee reports. “Dell, which is also working on a Windows 7-based tablet for enterprise customers due later this year, will evaluate launches of the Android tablet in other regions in the second half of the year, he said.”

“By launching the Android tablet in China, Dell hopes to give more time to developers to develop applications for the device as China blocks some Google applications and the Android Market is not yet available,” Lee reports. “The tablet market is currently dominated by Apple Inc’s iPads, Samsung Electronics and Motorola Mobility Holdings tablets.”

MacDailyNews Take: The tablet market is currently dominated by Apple Inc’s iPad. Period. And anybody who tells you any differently is either a liar, an idiot, or both.

  1. Umm, “we can’t make any money on this tablet if we have to ship it to America or Europe. No one will buy it for the cost it would incur with taxes and shipping fees- let alone the iPads sitting next to them. Let’s just sell it in China, if it dies, we can blame it on piracy.” So is the talk in the Dell board room.

  2. It’s probably Dell’s best shot for the short term. There currently isn’t quite the awareness of iPad in China compared to the US and Europe, so it’s an opportunity to rush in and get a share while there’s not too much competition.

There are two obvious flaws in Dell’s strategy. One is that ‘prosumers’ are more likely to know about the iPad than the population in general and the other is that if Dell can sell a knock-off Android tablet for say $450, a Chinese company can sell one for $400.

The bottom line is that Dell knows it can’t sell it’s Streak tablet to any market where the customers already have seen or used iPads and is desperately trying to exploit that opportunity while it lasts.

  3. China gets its hands on the hottest revolutionary tablet in our industry, and perhaps the most important invention of our time first. As the kids on the Internet like to say, U Mad USA? Ha ha ha.

  4. Dell & Prosumer? what does dell make that can be seriously called prosumer?

A person who is borderline a professional producer and consumer, would not be wasting any time on a Dell product. Especially if is they a professional producer. Because windows/dell configuration is only for conned-sumers not professional producers.

Oh and Michael Dell, should close all the doors and give the money back to the investors!
