Survey shows record interest in Apple’s iPhone among teens

“The 21st bi-annual Piper Jaffray teen survey of 4,500 high school students found that Apple continues to dominate the teen market and has driven surprisingly quick adoption of tablets by teens,” Josh Ong reports for AppleInsider. “‘Apple’s dominance in the mobile and online music markets is going seemingly unchecked, coupled with rising interest in the iPhone and iPad,’ the survey concluded.”

“The percentage of teens who own the iPhone jumped from 14 percent in October of last year to 17 percent this spring. The number of teens who plan on buying an iPhone in the next 6 months rose from 33 percent last fall to 37 percent this spring. According to Piper Jaffray, intent to buy has historically translated into subsequent market share gains,” Ong reports. “‘Interest among teens in purchasing an iPhone has grown steadily since Apple introduced the iPhone, and we expect this to continue,’ Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster noted.”

“The Spring 2011 survey marked the first time that Piper Jaffray included a tablet category. The percentage of teens who already own a tablet stood at a surprising 22 percent, while an additional 20 percent of teens indicated plans to purchase a tablet in the next 6 months,” Ong reports. “Though the survey did not specifically ask students which brand of tablet they owned, Munster viewed the data as a positive for Apple ‘given the iPad’s dominant position in the tablet market.'”

  1. What’s holding back the kids is not Apple. Yeah it’s parents to look at AT&T and a $30/mo fee, well $15-$25/mo.

I have a cell for my kid, $9/mo 100 minutes and it’s a Track Phone.
If I got my kid an iPhone, (I have one available already), then it’s (let’s say) $15+$5 (text) minimum $20/mo and sucking the rest of the minutes from our family plan.

    1. Its on AT&T and Verizon.. so you can go either place.

You do know there are Family plans, and Discounts for service?
I have the grandfathered $30 unlimited data plan, but.. i get a 30% discount on my service, and 50% on accessories 🙂 (as long as the accessory does not say Apple…)
the unlimited mobile to mobile plan adds unlimited texting and mobile phone calls to ANY mobile number, for $25 is it? (less discount) Granted this is all for AT&T discounts, i’m sure Verizon has similar things. Just go in to your cell provider’s store and ask about the discounts.

Granted, $10 a month for 100 minutes isnt bad.. But you could bundle all your families phones together under a better plan.
My plan for just me is like 450 minutes, and now with the unlimited mobile to mobile stuff, i use like 20 minutes now 🙂 i didn’t realize how much of my minutes were to mobile numbers…

as for the Teens wanting the iPhone… I concur with the results of the study.
My niece (17) is pushing my sister to get one as soon as her current plan runs out end of next month. (with Verizon) I told her (the niece) i’ll help her convince my sister to get it. I may have to spend money in the end…

  2. Nooo, they’re all going to purchase that dominant iPad “killer”, the Samsung Galaxy Tab!! Because those expert electronics reviewers at Consumer Reports said so – its their tablet “Best Buy”! And they’re just flyin’ off the shelves!
