RUMOR: iPad 2 to feature Light Peak port

“After reading the report that Apple is planning to introduce its new Light Peak-based high speed interconnect technology ‘soon,’ it struck us that Light Peak could help explain some particularly incongruous rumors we’ve been hearing about the iPad 2 over the past few months,” Arnold Kim reports for MacRumors.

Kim reports, “First, is the presence of a ‘mystery port’ on early iPad 2 case designs from third-party manufacturers… Light Peak prototypes have been using hybrid USB 3 connector connectors that might easily be confused for USB.”

    1. Ah, there were no USB devices when Apple moved to USB even though many PCs had USB.

I suspect Apple will enable over-the-air syncing and updates with light-peak as device/sync port. Over-the-air will be much slow than light-peak considering that light-peak could handle the fasted SSD drives. Could you imagine 200 MB/sec vs. 20 MB/sec? USB doesn’t even come close.

    2. This makes more sense than a USB port on iPad 2. Precisely BECAUSE there are no current LightPeak devices on the market, iPad 2 customers will not be trying to connect crazy USB devices to an iPad that won’t work and possibly even cause damage (and then complain to Apple about it).

  1. Not forgetting an HDMI port, USB port, serial port, SD card slot, DVI out port, VGA port, in fact a port of every kind dotted round the periphery of the iPad. Why go for the minimalist, clean look when you can festoon your product with every imaginable port in a head-to-head with the upcoming Android tablets.

See we have TWO HDMI ports on the iPad compared to your measly ONE in the Xoom.

THREE USB ports for every ONE in the HP TouchPad.

Quad core ARM CPU vs. dual core CPU on Android.

Apple has $59 billion in the bank. If more ports, more processors & more screen real estate – 15″ iPad! to distinguish it from the run-of-the mill Android tablets, so much the better!

    More! More! More!

    1. I know you’re being sarcastic, but keep in mind that if you have Light Peak, you don’t need HDMI, USB, DVI, FireWire, or really even the iPod dock (except for physical legacy, which affects iPhones and iPods more than the iPad). This is because all the other protocols can run over Light Peak. You’d just need a Light Peak to HDMI/USB/FireWire/etc cable or adapter.

  2. Actually lightpeak would make sense to debut on the iPad 2. It would guarantee instant sales in the millions creating a huge market for Light Peak overnight. While they woud be back compatible with USB Light Peak would allow near instant syncing with video in and out. any port missing from the iPad could be added via light peak. It could be used as an extra display. HHmmm you could plug into an itunes kiosk at your local store and download a full length feature film in less time then geting it from redbox.

Actually Light Peak on the iPad is an easy way for Apple to leap frog all the android tablets by at least a year in one big jump. It could actually bankrupt several companies. Anybody putting out a tablet in the next few months thinking they could compete with Apple would be shot down completely. Xoom and Playbook would fail miserably (more then they already would). Not only would Apple set back its tablet competitors but PC vendors would be sunk as well if Apple is ready to put Light Peak across the product line then it would take others at least 6 months to catch up. In the mean time Apple would sell millions of PCs to iPad converts.

Yes light Peak on the iPad2 is crazy, crazy like a Jobs.

  3. I doubt it.

Steve wants to keep the iPad as cord free as possible. I can’t imagine that the iPad as enough horse power to do much or run much besides the internal display.

  4. What about if they introduce lightpeak on macpros and ipads at same time. You want the best connection, you have to buy both!! 🙂

Personally, I think Apple will hold back another year.
