“All the other reviews you’ve seen are from journalists who received Verizon iPhones from either Verizon or Apple and didn’t have to pay for them. I had no such loaner, so had to do the honorable thing: I bought one and used it for a week now. It cost me about $250 because I already had a Verizon account,” Robert Scoble writes for Scobleizer.
Pros for Verizon:
1. No dropped calls
2. A wider coverage area in SF area
3. Demonstratably clearer voice quality
4. Data worked more places
5. Wifi hotspot out of the box.
Pros for AT&T:
1. You can use Voice and Data at same time on AT&T
2. International usage
3. Data speed
“So, which one wins? Well, for me, Verizon does,” Scoble writes. “Why? Because it more consistently worked with both data and voice. But with the caveat that you stay in the US and that you don’t care about using voice and data at the same time.”

Perhaps that’s why he didn’t get a “loaner” 😀
Wow. I feel incredibly enlightened now that I read this article.
I wonder if he will be testing them anyplace other than San Fran?
Everyone pretty well knew Verizon would work better in the HugeDamCity environment.
Apple nor Verizon have not mentioned the total number of units sold… It has been over a week. This suggest that sales are low and they have not yet reached 1 million units in over a week. Reports already back this up. Apple needs Verizon badly if they want to grow and maintain the flat market share. Android is growing at an alarming rate and iOS is losing the battle.
Apple normally bloats about how many units they sold in pre-orders, first weekend, first week etc… they haven’t as of yet for a reason. Apple and Verizon are probably wondering why the sales are low… because the iPhone 4 is dated compared to today’s technology and Apple should have waited till June/July and release they new phone at the same time they release it to the rest of the world… That’s my opinion…
marco……..POLO……….marco…….POLO……
hehe
“That’s my opinion…” HAH! If I only had a dollar for every opinion I’ve heard about what Apple does wrong, I’d be a gazillionaire by now. Thank goodness I don’t listen to those opinions. I own Apple stock and now I’m almost a bazillionaire.
“…iOS is losing the battle”
What battle would that be, Marco? The battle for profitability? It has already been established that iPhones reap far more profit per unit than any other phone and a major reason why they destroy analysts’ estimates every quarter. The battle for hearts and minds? The iPhone is the highest rated consumer electronics device on the planet. So I wonder: what “battle” is it that you think Apple is losing with the iPhone?
One battle is that you need a case to use the iPhone 4 properly. i know. I had two iPhone 4’s and tried two different networks… and in poor reception areas (I am sure it’s a huge problem on AT&T too) the iPhone 4 data halts or loses a connection easily by simply touching the lower left side. Not cool. Yes all phones can have this issue, but Apple touts a multi billion dollar antenna testing facility and they should have caught this in the testing stage. A normal person holds a phone by the bottom. Apple should have designed the phone with that in mind. They obviously went after design and not functionality.
The other battle is Apple may have the lead now. As the iPhone grows, it will be hard to beat previous numbers. Take Windows for example. They have a 90% percent market share. The only way they can go is in reverse. It would be hard for Microsoft to grow Windows above 90%. Mac OS X is small… very small. Apple has a better opportunity to grow than Microsoft does. As Apple grows iOS, it will also face the same problem.
I love boasters who gloat, only to find out later that they were horribly wrong. Someone should iCal this nonsense.
If the numbers were stellar, Apple would have published 1.7 million units in 3 days.
So I should take your word for what “stellar” numbers are? Apple is going to do just fine, regardless of your opinion.
so what happened to the critics that said verizon will prove that it’s the iphone that is flawed not the network ???
No Verizon iPhone for me until #1 and #2 are no longer AT&T only.
I would like to him do the same test is some other cities. He just might come up with some different conclusions. Not all iPhone users live in SF.
Exactly.
I can show them holes in the verizon network here… Big holes.
I can take them to the Khols and watch them not be able to make a call.
Glad verizon has the iPhone… But verizon isn’t better than AT&T everywhere.
I’ll never go to sf, and I doubt I’ll ever go to NYC. Two places I always hear AT&T sucks..
And i do leave the USA… So verizons out.
Two of my coworkers, one with a Blackberry and one with a Droid, got iPhones this weekend on Verizon. They will get to a million if they have not already very soon.
As one poster said in the original article, (that they would wait for the iPhone 5 this summer) I think that perhaps many others are also going to wait for v5.
My house-mate, a long time Android and Verizon user got his new Verizon iPhone 4 and after a week made this statement. “Now i get it! I realize what all the iPhone fuss is about. So much easier and much higher quality hardware and apps. I love it, and much clearer call quality.” Me being a long time AT&T iPhone user was reminded of the great pleasure I got when I started using my first Mac computer.
