“After years of rumor and speculation, the Verizon iPhone is finally on sale to the general public,” David Goldman and Laurie Segall report for CNNMoney. “Verizon and Apple stores across the country opened their doors at 7 a.m. local time to sell the iPhone 4, which for the first time is available on a U.S. wireless network not named AT&T”
“In contrast to the lines of thousands that turned out in June for the iPhone 4’s release, the Verizon iPhone got off to a quieter start,” Goldman and Segall report. “The line of waiting buyers held just eight people 15 minutes before it went on sale at Apple’s flagship New York City store near Central Park. ‘I’m not happy with my [Motorola] Droid,’ said Robert Baneky, a Verizon customer who had been on line since 5:45 a.m.”
Goldman and Segall report, “At a nearby Verizon Wireless store, a queue of about a dozen buyers held a few ready to trade in their existing AT&T iPhones. The first buyer in line, Lauren Asther, 19, was ready for a new carrier: ‘I have the AT&T phone, and it kept dropping calls,’ she said… The iPhone went on sale online last week exclusively to existing Verizon customers, and the carrier sold out its stock in just 13 hours. Early estimates from Ticonderoga Securities suggest Apple sold between 700,000 and 1 million Verizon iPhones last week.”

I like my new AT&T unlimited mobile to any mobile. I hate Verizon. Good for them though. Hope their grass is greener.
Yeah, the unlimited mobile to any mobile is a sweet deal. But Verizon is offering unlimited data, and to me that’s more important, especially considering that nearly every person I call on a regular basis has Verizon anyways.
Except you can’t read… You have to have the unlimited plan to GET the unlimited mobile part…
We have unlimited data, AND unlimited mobile now.
Who has unlimited mobile? Not Verizon. AT&T offers it to anyone with or anyone upgrading to unlimited messaging, which I already had on my plan. It doesn’t cost a dime extra. I really would love unlimited data so I could take advantage of Netflix over 3G but other than that it’s working well as it is.
No, you have to have unlimited messaging on your plan in order to qualify, not unlimited data. Try to be a little less condescending next time, there’s no reason for it.
Weather, limited demand, or what?
Estimates are that they sold up to one million in pre-sales, which exceeded the debut of iPhone 4 on AT&T. So by all accounts this launch was bigger.
I think it has more to do with:
– Dealing with current carrier nonsense
– Waiting on the iPhone 5
I think the test will be to see what kind of lines exist come the new iPhone.
Well it’s because so many other millions users already have an iPhone.
The impact was overstated.
And so many are completely unsure that in less than six months that a new iPhone is on the horizon.
It’s great the iPhone is on verizon but I believe estimates of conversion were over. Not everyone can afford a new phone every six months. Plus you have all those droid users verizon is gonna make them fullfil their contract because it has their bloatware.
My brother’s Verizon iP4 arrived today. He called me on Facetime, and nearly peed his pants he was so pleased with it (this is his first iPhone).
No long lines was due to huge preorders. My brother noted that his phone was shipped from the US, so Verizon obviously had a metric sh!tload of them stockpiled.
To be clear they are not sure if verizon will get the iPhone 5 off the bat. It’s better to sit this one out for the time being to see what the refresh rate for verizon will be. We still don’t know if apple an AT&T worked some deal out to keep them ahead of the game to allow verizon to sell iPhones, ones that are 6 months old already. Because as far the release date you have to wonder why now beyond the bs answer that cook gave. And so close to iOS 5 and iPhone 5
Seriously, they already sold a million phones. Why is it surprising everyone that nobody is standing in line. I say, good for Apple and Verizon for an amazing presale that allowed their customers to shop from home instead of waiting in line all day and night. Many thousands of customers got their Verizon iPhone early.
online preorders took the heat off.
(Pun intended for those really cold areas.)
I expected huge lines so ordered online instead. Had I known the lack of queues I would have gone to a store.
As it stands I have to wait until 18th for my phone to ship 🙁
Can’t cancel and go to the Store?
I went to Verizon store this morning. They cancelled the pre-order I made yesterday and I walked out with my new 32G model.
I think ppl are finally realizing it’s much easier to simply order everything online. I’ve made the switch the last couple months to online shopping. Now there’s so many reviews available that research is easy. The quick convenience factor, plus not having to go out and deal with parking / crowds / time, is such a relief.
Read earlier that many users phoned in their reservations for in store pickup this morning, due to the freezing temperatures.
Between that, pre orders and online ordering, the numbers will still be huge.
Help when the website doesn’t go down like it did with AT&T. The only choice was the store. Verizon’s site did have a short down period, but managed to pick back up shortly after.
AAPL tanking was down nearly $9 a few minutes ago. Less than overwhelming demand does not bode well.
AAPL not looking so good with the underwhelming demand at Verizon I fear.
Another dip worth taking advantage of…
Apple just fell $11 from about $359 to $348 on huge volume about 15 mins ago. WTF?
I’ve had my verizon iPhone for 3 days already.
Recovering nicely now. I smell shenanigans, but fortunately, my stop loss didn’t kick in. A few dollars lower and I would have been angry.
Hugh B : you are correct sir.
at one apple store i was at, 50 store employees cheered a total of 4 customers when doors opened. it was embarrassing

Ordering online and having it delivered where one can activate at home without having to deal with the weather is a big deal. Everyone I know who is purchasing the VZ iPhone is doing so online.
A co worker who said he was going to get a ms phone last year…. Walked up to me this morning and showed me his brand new verizon iPhone.
Got it Tuesday, he ordered online.
He said it was the easiest time he has ever had when upgrading. Just open the box and follow the instructions, was glad he didn’t have to go into any store.
Could the small lines also have something to do with the sheer ridiculous number of Verizon stores? Here in northeast Ohio, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a Verizon store. No joke: last time I checked, near where I live there were two Verizon stores on opposite sides of the street from each other. They are all over the place (and that’s not counting the mall kiosks). It really thins out crowds when there are so many choices of where to go.

Exactly… people are so stupid… massive online sales… Verizon stores everywhere and frigid weather. You know, Apple has always launched during warmer months.
No wonder everyone is ordering online.
Do you swing a lot of dead cats in northeast Ohio?
Do you swing a lot of dead cats in northeastern Ohio?
he must be a country bumkin
Of course there will not be long lines from Verizon users. They have been willing to wait years for this day, what is a few more days? The impatient ones, the ones so committed they would wait in line already bought the iPhone from AT&T.
What does that piper Jaffrey analyst have to say now? The one who predicted a million sold in first three days:
Stop being so retarded… many estimates are 500,000 to 1,000,000 pre-sold. Lines in this case are meaningless… especially since Apple has never launched mid-winter. IF I was going to get one, why stand in sub-zero temps when I can order on line. All Apple launches were in the summer.
A bunch of people will be eating crow when the big sales numbers hit.
Apple/Verizon’s pre-sales for the iPhone 4 crushed all of the much hyped Android debuts. Nothing to worry about at all. It’s good to be the king.
