Welcome to the new MacDailyNews!
Lots of changes. In fact, everything is new. Things should seem snappier, too!
What you see today is a base to build upon. We intentionally made the site similar to the old one to ease the transition. We can now add new features easier and more cleanly in the future.
Many, many thanks to our developer Crowd Favorite and our website host WordPress.com VIP!
Please note that the MacDailyNews iOS app has been removed from the App Store for retooling. The MacDailyNews app will not work for the time being. It will return to the App Store ASAP. You cannot use the app until an update becomes available. Meanwhile, please use Mobile Safari to visit the site.
So, poke around, go get your usernames (the switch to WordPress requires new logins to be created unless you already have a WordPress account – click “Register” above the yellow bar, top right or just click here), subscribe to email updates if you like (left column, right above the Joy of Tech link), and, of course, let us know what you think.
Welcome!
MacDailyNews Note: Your name in the MacDailyNews comments section will be whatever you enter in your WordPress Profile next to “Display name publicly as.” It does not have to be the same as your WordPress username.
We are aware that some browsers are showing headlines in the default Times font. This is not as intended and we are investigating potential fixes.
Thank you for your patience!
Looking GOOOOOD
I agree, long overdue.
I’ll tell you what’s overdue: Being able to actually reply to posts! Look, I’m replying to you, and I didn’t need to use an “@”!

@LordRobin: Pretty cool. 😛
Agreed.
The site is nice, I like WordPress.
What makes the site more practical is precisely the WordPress hosting. Now, we have many different ways of tracking our comments and responses, plus I’m sure, it became much easier for MDN to post new articles from various devices.
The look is close enough to the original not to be a major disruption to the traditionalist users, not to mention the host seems to be much faster and more agile than the old one.
If we could only know which specific HTML tags are allowed and/or disallowed…
This?
and this?
this
maybe thisOthers?
underline
small, big!
firstsecondthird
code textsubscript or superscript
More?
And how about…
this?
Did it work? 🙂
I like the new design a lot! Easier to read, faster and modern.
Congrats!
Can you use WordPress to make whine?
(I’m sure we’ll find out soon…)
So, whoop-de-doo! Why can’t I use my original log in for this site?
Great improvement. Nice layout. And, yes, it’s snappier! 😉
I like how on the Mobile version you can arrow back and forth between stories. Nice.
Not thrilled with the font. A Times-like font just doesn’t work here.
It’s a sans-serif font, genius: Lucida. Times is a serif font. Not even close. Just proves some people will blame anything just to take a dump on something different.
Uh, I’m pretty sure melgross was referring to the *headline* font, which is indeed a “Times-like” serif font – I had very much the same reaction.
Just proves some people will attack anyone, just to take a dump on someone with a different opinion. 😛
I don’t see any Times or other serifed font. All sans serif on my browser
I have Times font headlines, too. At least on my work computer, Safari 5.0.3 on XP.
I agree the font could be slightly larger. It looks small even on my 27-inch screen.
The problem is that the style sheet only declares one typeface per header element (h1, h2, etc.), instead of a series of faces. So if the user doesn’t have that typeface then the default is used.
Normally developers specify a number of typefaces, separated by a comma, so that people who don’t have the main typeface can still be served with something similar they are more likely to have. Example: The body copy for this article has a style declaration that specifies Lucida Grande first, then Helvetica, then Arial, then “sans-serif” for the worst case scenario. So if users don’t have Lucida Grande (i.e. most Windows users) they will see Helvetica. If they the don’t have Helvetica they’ll see Arial, etc.
Additionally the site is attempting to use Myriad Pro for article headers, which to my knowledge is not installed by default on any system. It does come with Adobe Illustrator, though, so most designers will have it.
The site is in Myriad Pro for me (designer) and I love that.
Hope it’s faster
Darn, had to change my user name from Jax44.
Was aJax44 taken? 😉
Yes, but it may have been me on the mobile site. Have to check it out
WordPress.com, probably already millions of usernames taken.
Go to you profile and change your display name. You can make it whatever you want, which means you get your old name back… But it also means your identity can be jacked too.
With all due respect, at first blush, I like the previous format. It was easier to read, a bit more compact, and quicker to scan through the different topics.
And what happened to the verified username function?
Yeah, I sorta gotta agree with each of those issues.
Let me be the first to say that losing my 3 letter handle because WordDress requires 4 character handles blows chunks.
Not supporting existing 3 character handles blows chunks.
Yeah, I’m hating the fact that my name was already taken.
Agreed. Can’t use my old name, and had to use this stupid one ;-p
Ahhh, yes – just saw (or was it just added) the note about “display name”. Score!
Outside of the font selection, I like it! (Maybe I just need to get my eyes adjusted to it)
Hafta get used to the new fonts
And yet, even though my name was taken (Darkness) it let me post a message using that name. Something is broken here methinks…
I hafta get used to the new fonts..
got my username back….but I WANT MY CAPITAL LETTERS. When I Registered, I put in iPhoneEnvy……wordpress changed it to all lowercase…… losers…..
Go back to your account and change how your name is displayed. Lowercase is just for registration.
I hafta get used to the fonts..
LOL! takes awhile apparently for messages to be updated in the discussion forums here lol… mind my previous “tests” ehehe
I thought I wasn’t allowed to use my name “Wha’ because it’s three characters, but apparently it worked.
I was wondering when MDN would drop your old CMS and get with WordPress. They work basically the same, except word-press is open which means more plugins and options.
Wow! The text doesn’t look like total crap anymore! I like it!
Wow – much needed improvement. WordPress is a much better engine than that crap you had before.
So. Previous threads with multiple pages seem to now be truncated deleting the end postings previously there.
Looks like it just put them on one running page like MDN used to do.
And the ‘Recent Articles’ are at the bottom again.
Sweet!
I like the one running page. But an article is missing the latest postings. Perhaps some items were lost in the transition to the new format.
